LEURDA, Gorj County, Romania--For 41 years, Sofia Chiţoran, 84, aka Grandma Sofia, arrives at the kindergarten in Leurda village, near Motru, Gorj district, Romania, every morning at 7.00 a.m. at the latest to clean the classrooms, thus setting the world record for the Oldest Working Cleaning Lady.

At 5 in the morning, she is already at work and cleaning the halls and classrooms, and then (in the cold days) she lights the fire to make it as good as possible for the children, the Observator News reports.

On March 8, International Women's Day, the children rewarded her with songs and flowers to thank her for always taking care of them.

"She is the first to be present, to make sure that at 8.00 the children are well received and warm in the classroom," the Pro Tv reports.

The old woman says that, at her age, the greatest success is health. And the fact that she works every day helps her a lot, she says.

Sofia Chiţoran: “I work, what to do, even at my age. The youth go to factories in the city to work for a lot of money, there is not a lot of money here ”. Grandma's schedule doesn't end after she leaves kindergarten. Grandma Sofia goes home and works in her garden, an example for the other locals.

The old woman is employed for two hours, but she is always on schedule and works as much as necessary. She earns 440 lei (107 USD), to which is added a pension of 600 lei (146 USD) for working at the local cooperative farm, the Radio Targu Jiu reports.


She complains about nothing, even though she is leaning on a whip and caring for one of her sons, because he suffers from epilepsy. Grandma Sofia has three children, one of whom is retired. She tells us that his job does not tempt young people.

The deputy mayor of the city of Motru, Cosmin Morega, was the one who found out the story of the old woman, after going to kindergarten to see what repairs need to be made in this institution.


"...that keeps her alive and well, this daily activity around those babies. I saw how lovingly a storyteller tells them, plays with them, asks them if they did their homework, the drawings. I consider that this activity keeps Mrs. Sofia active and she does it out of a lot, a lot of love for children. It has already become a habit.


And if she doesn't have work, every day she has to go there, ten minutes, half an hour, an hour, as needed, to take care of another flower, to have no problems with a window, it's an activity on who does it with great pleasure.
