World's Largest Wedding Cookie Table, world record set in Monongahela, Pennsylvania

Monongahela, Pennsylvania, United States--The wedding cookie table set up by the Monongahela Area Historical Society as part of its celebration of the 250th anniversary of Monongahela's founding held 88,425 cookies, which were served at three weddings and three vow renewal ceremonies, setting the new world record for the World's Largest Wedding Cookie Table, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"A Guinness World Record was broken in a Pennsylvania town when a wedding cookie table was set up with more than 50,000 cookies," the UPI reports.

"A Guinness adjudicator said the table set up Sunday by the Monongahela Area Historical Society held more than 50,000 cookies, breaking the record for the world's largest wedding cookie table.

"The Monongahela Area Historical Society set up the table as part of its celebration of the 250th anniversary of Monongahela's founding. The cookies were served at three weddings and three vow renewal ceremonies Sunday."

"The largest wedding cookie table includes 88,425 cookies, and was achieved by the Monongahela Area Historical Society (USA) in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, USA, on 11 August 2019," the Guinness World Records says.

"The Monongahela Area Historical Society set this record title as part of their multi-day celebration of Monongahela's 250th Anniversary. The record-setting cookie table was part of the reception celebration for three marriage ceremonies and three vow renewals that occurred during the attempt.

"The elaborate display filled 140 tables, and included at least 1,308 distinct “plates” of cookies from hundreds of professional and home bakers. Any leftover cookies after the event were donated to 412 Food Rescue."

"For many in western Pennsylvania, the cookie table is more important than the wedding cake. And now we have the distinction of having the largest cookie table in the world," the CBS News reports.

"The Monongahela Area Historical Society broke a Guinness World Record on Sunday for the largest wedding cookie table. It came as Monongahela celebrated its 250th birthday on Sunday. They mixed birthday celebrations with weddings as the table was part of at least two weddings."

"The park was filled Sunday with thousands of cookies as people poured in to set the record for the largest wedding cookie table on the final day of the city’s 250th birthday celebration," the Herald-Star reports.

"The idea for the wedding cookie table came from Laura Magone, president of Monongahela Area Historical Society, which organized the weekend’s events. With the large crowd that gathered to set up their cookie displays, Magone said they were “overwhelmed” with the response.

"Magone also runs a Facebook page, the Wedding Cookie Table Community, which has grown to more than 23,000 members. Members of that group helped Sunday’s event grow to the size that it did."

"The city of Monongahela celebrated its 250th birthday Sunday, and during the celebration, history was made in a very Pittsburgh way. A wedding was held in an effort to set a world record -- the world's largest wedding cookie table," the KIRO 7 News Seattle reports.

"With a judge from Guinness World Records there, they found out if they were successful. They needed at least 18,000 cookies. "We're over 19,000 at this point. We know that you have set a new world record," the judge said.

"The rules are tough to get this record, including a plan so that cookies don't go to waste. The Monongahela Area Historical Society said it will be donating any leftovers to first responders, 412 Food Rescue and an area city mission."

"Laura Magone, the creator of The Wedding Cookie Table Community Facebook page, came up with the idea to establish the record a few years ago, but she knew she wanted to do it during her hometown of Monongahela’s 250th anniversary celebration — and in the region where the tradition started," the Pittsburgh Magazine reports.

"In order for the attempt to be considered by Guinness, there are certain guidelines in place: there must be a minimum of 10 cookie varieties, purchased or homemade, each cookie must be counted by a third-party counter not involved with the Monongahela Area Historical Society and there must be a health officer, in this case two, present.

"In addition to those guidelines, in order for any food record to be considered by Guinness, there must be a plan in place to ensure that there will not be any food waste. Magone says they will be giving any cookie that is not eaten to 412 Food Rescue, Washington City Mission and different groups of first responders."

"Magone founded the Wedding Cookie Table Community Facebook group in 2015, after arriving early to a wedding and realizing just how much time, effort and care had gone into the cookie table’s preparation," the Pittsburgh Media Partnership says.

"Now, coming up on its 10-year anniversary, the page has grown to nearly 300,000 members worldwide. Members of the group share recipes and how-tos, like how many cookies to prepare per person, and how to freeze cookies so that they keep well.

"For this reason, whenever possible, Magone holds events locally — such as in 2019, when the Facebook group established the Guinness World Record for the largest wedding cookie table."
