Kellogg, Idaho, United States--Silver Mountain’s gondola in Kellogg, Idaho, United States, runs for 3.1 miles, a single stage journey from Kellogg to the Mountain House climbing over 1000 meters (3400 feet) for nearly twenty minutes, setting the world record for being the World's Longest Single-Stage Gondola Ride, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"Silver Mountain Resort is a ski resort in the northwest United States, located in the Silver Valley region of northern Idaho, just south of Kellogg and Interstate 90 in Shoshone County.
"Originally opened as "Jackass Ski Bowl" in January 1968 on Wardner Peak, it was renamed "Silverhorn" in 1973 following an ownership change.
"With planned improvements, most notably the gondola from the city of Kellogg and expansion on Kellogg Peak, the name was changed to "Silver Mountain" in the summer of 1989." (Wikipedia)
"On April 25, 1989, ground was broken for the construction of the gondola and base village, additional chairlifts, and other resort improvements. Renamed Silver Mountain in July, it opened for summer operations in June 1990, and for skiing that November.
"The elevation at the bottom terminal of the gondola is slightly under 2,300 feet (700 m) and unloads at about 5,650 feet (1,720 m); the 3.1-mile (5.0 km) trip takes seventeen minutes, traveling south-southeast over Wardner.
"Gondola and chairlift rides, mountain biking, hiking, and concerts at the high-mountain outdoor amphitheater (capacity: 2500) are the primary summer activities at Silver Mountain. The base village and gondola base are located less than a half-mile (800 m) from exit #49 of Interstate 90." (Wikipedia)
"During the mid-1980s, city councilman Wayne Ross came up with the concept of constructing a gondola from the valley floor to an expanded ski and summer resort area to stimulate a stagnating economy, which was devastated by the loss of mining and logging jobs," the official website of the Silver Mountain Resort says.
"The Gondola Board, comprised of Duane Little, Terry Douglas, Dale Lavigne, Terry Turnbow, and three representatives from Von Roll Tramways, worked tirelessly to attract funding for the gondola project. In December 1987, Congress approved a $6.4 million grant to assist in the construction of the gondola.
"Von Roll Tramways, a Swiss lift manufacturing company, agreed to guarantee the remaining funds needed to construct the gondola. In April 1989, ground was broken for the construction of the gondola and other resort improvements."
"Silver Mountain’s gondola runs for 3.1 miles, climbing over 1000 meters (3400 feet) for nearly twenty minutes. There are longer gondolas in the world, but those either use “angle stations” or don’t carry people," the Idaho for 91 Days says.
"We’re constitutionally unable to resist anything that owns a world record (see our trips to the world’s biggest department store, and the world’s biggest beagle-shaped bed & breakfast), so there was no way we’d be skipping out on Silver Mountain’s gondola. Although it was well before ski season, the gondola runs on weekends throughout the summer and fall. At the top of the mountain, there are a couple hikes and mountain bike trails.
"Our trip was just as fun and scenic as we figured it would be. Twenty minutes can pass by pretty fast when you’re soaring above a landscape as lovely as the Silver Valley’s."
"Enjoy a scenic ride on North America's longest gondola to the mountain top where you can access hiking trails and the best lift served biking in the Northwest," the Silver Mountain Resort says.
"Silver Mountain Resort is home to North America's longest gondola - a 3.1 mile journey from Kellogg to the Mountain House where all will enjoy fresh mountain air, stunning panoramic views, and delicious food!
"Every Friday during the summer months, enjoy a scenic gondola ride, live music, and savory mountaintop BBQ at our Ride & Dine event. Dinner is served from 3-8pm, and local musicians will begin performing at 5pm. Lift ticket is included in the price. Ride & Dine is every Friday starting June 21st and July 5th through August 30th. "Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg is home to North America’s longest gondola – a 3.1-mile-long journey from Kellogg’s downtown high up onto Silver Mountain, a terrific year-round resort with excellent skiing and snowboarding in winter and a variety of mountain activities in summer," the Visit North Idaho says.
"Bring your mountain bike on the gondola or come as you are to simply enjoy the ride, interpretive trails on the mountain, a game of disc golf or a tasty meal in the Mountain House lodge.
"In winter the gondola runs daily; in summer, it operates weekends and many days midweek. Check the resort’s website for hours of operation."
"Silver Mountain is a medium sized ski area in Northern Idaho’s panhandle between Montana and Washington and is home to North America’s longest (single stage) gondola," the One Life To Sky says.
"Single stage means that at no point does the lift pass through an intermediate point that dislodges the cabins from the haul rope, thus opening the doors for a midway entry or exit.
"Single stage means it’s just one long ride from top to bottom, with no stops in between. 19 minutes long to be exact, so you better get comfy and enjoy the views! While the gondola is a detachable high speed lift, it takes this long because it is traveling a whopping 16,350 feet in distance from the town of Kellogg at 2,300 feet to Kellogg Peak at 5,700 feet."
"Silver Mountain in Kellogg, Idaho boasts North America’s longest gondola. The ride starts in the village of Kellogg, Idaho at the base of Silver Mountain at an elevation of 2,300 feet," the One Life To Sky says.
"Once aboard, a 19 minute, 3.1 mile ride gets you 3,400 vertical feet higher, to an elevation of 5,700 feet at the Mountain Haus terminal on Kellogg Peak. The gondola cars seat 8 people each."
"Silver Mountain Gondola is .25 mi. e. off I-90 exit 49 to 610 Bunker Ave. Riders travel 3.1 miles in what is said to be North America's longest single-stage gondola.
" The ride takes 24 minutes to go 3,400 feet from the base to the Mountain House upper terminal. Mountain House features include mountain biking and hiking trails, a children's play area, a nature trail and an amphitheater where concerts are staged."
