Pontevedra, Spain--During the celebration of their Ham Fair, the mayor of A Cañiza, Luis Piña, announced a 20.38-meter-long, 150-kilo ham sandwich was made in a municipality in Pontevedra (Galicia); the sandwich sets the world record for the World's Longest Galician Ham Sandwich, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"A 20.38-meter-long, 150-kilo ham sandwich made in a municipality in Pontevedra (Galicia) is aiming to break a Guinness World Record," La Vanguardia reports.
"This was announced by the mayor of A Cañiza, Luis Piña, during the celebration of the 58th edition of their Ham Fair, where it is customary to bake a large sandwich that is later distributed among the attendees.
"On this occasion, they managed to bake a rustic bread loaf that exceeded the 19.5 meters in length from the previous year, which they filled with a single slice of ham measuring 23.30 meters. “The 20.38 m sandwich had a total baking time of 3 hours, with the loaf remaining within 6 m of the oven, on average between 35 and 40 minutes, resulting in a tasty sandwich made with rustic bread enriched with our ham,” said Piña.
"Once they surpassed their personal record, the City Council distributed over 650 ham sandwiches resulting from the massive sandwich among the municipality's residents.
"A sweet roscón was also baked for dessert, and a bread dough workshop was organized for the youngest attendees. The mayor thanked the professionals, entrepreneurs, and workers of the City Council for their work carried out year after year.
"In A Cañiza, a municipality of around 5,000 inhabitants, boasts of producing one of the best hams in the country. Its bars and restaurants receive many visitors for the sandwiches they make with this cured meat, which is also served roasted, as a tapa, or on a plate with french fries and peppers,"
La Vanguardia reports.
"The ham sandwich is a common type of sandwich. The bread may be fresh or toasted, and it can be made with a variety of toppings including cheese and vegetables like lettuce, tomato, onion or pickle slices. Various kinds of mustard and mayonnaise are also common.
"Sliced bread, sliced cheese, and sliced cooked ham are very readily available in Western supermarkets and as a result ham sandwiches are quick and easy to prepare. They are a common component of a packed lunch." (Wikipedia)
"So when master butcher Nico Jimenez set his sights on a world record he kept a steady hand and carved a single 20 metre long slice of parma ham," the
Austrian Times reported.
"Then the crafty cook earned his second Guinness world record - by creating the world's longest ham sandwich in Pamplona, Spain. Using the single slice of ham - which tipped the scales at more than a stone - he made a 120ft long bar snack known locally as a 'pincho'.
"We sold the sandwich at one Euro per portion and gave the money to charity. Nico is delighted to have made the record books," said an organiser.
"Lacón is a Spanish dried ham obtained from the shoulders or front legs of the pig. Historically, lacón has been mentioned in texts since at least the 17th century.
"Lacón galego from Galicia, Spain, have a protected geographical indication (PGI) status under European law. Production of lacón galego may take place in Galicia, from the rearing and slaughter of the pigs, to the curing of the final product.
"The actual product is only made with the shoulder, rather than the whole leg, as is usual with other jamónes (lit. 'hams'). (Wikipedia)
"The following breeds of pig may be used to make lacón: Celtic, Large White, Landrace or Duroc, and there are two type of lacón, depending on how the pig is reared:
