Buzau, Romania--A giant black amber nugget, also known as the Rumanit amber, used as a door stop by an old woman from Colti commune, Buzau county, Romania, was classified as a treasure object and brought to the Buzău County Museum; it is between 40 and 70 million years old, weighs almost 3.5 kilograms and sets the world record for being the World's Largest Rumanit Amber Nugget, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"Buzău Amber is a protected area of national interest located in the area of the Curbura Carpathians - which corresponds to IUCN category III (geological and paleontological nature reserve), located in Buzău County on the administrative territory of Colți commune.
"The area of the reserve has an area of 2.52 hectares and is located in the northwestern part of Buzău County, at the foot of the Ivănețu Massif at an altitude of 500-600 m, in the northeast of the village of Colți, near the county road that connects the locality of Colți from the village of Aluniș[4]. Access is on DN10 Buzău-Întorsura Buzăului until Pâtârlagele, then right towards Colți and later on DC71 towards Aluniș. The area corresponds only to the richest ambriferous perimeter in the area ("Strâmba - Comarnici"), their total number being 7.
"At the level of the protected area in the exposed strata or in the soil, amber rocks (yellow amber) have been discovered with a special value both from a qualitative point of view and through the more than 160 colors and shades[2] of predominantly dark colors , from red to black. Some of these have a rich content of fossil remains of arachnids, coleoptera, diptera, crustaceans, myriapods or hymenoptera, (micro)lepidoptera, reptiles, bird feathers, animal hairs. On the protected territory is the former Strâmba amber mine, known as one of the most productive." (Wikipedia)
"In 1979, the Buzău County Museum begins the acquisition of amber and ethnographic objects from the Colți commune - brought together under the name of the Colți Museum Collection (currently the Colți Amber Collection, so on June 14, 1980 it opens a exhibition with over 270 raw and machined pieces, of which the largest weighs 3.45 kg.
"At Colți they were taken to a house called "Amber Museum" - built in popular style in the years 1973 - 1974, part of the exhibits. A mine, used exclusively for tourist purposes, was dug near the museum." (Wikipedia)
"Amber is fossilized tree resin. Examples of it have been appreciated for its color and natural beauty since the Neolithic times, and worked as a gemstone since antiquity. Amber is used in jewelry and as a healing agent in folk medicine.
"The abnormal development of resin in living trees (succinosis) can result in the formation of amber. Impurities are quite often present, especially when the resin has dropped onto the ground, so the material may be useless except for varnish-making. Such impure amber is called firniss. Such inclusion of other substances can cause the amber to have an unexpected color. Pyrites may give a bluish color. Bony amber owes its cloudy opacity to numerous tiny bubbles inside the resin. However, so-called black amber is really a kind of jet.In darkly clouded and even opaque amber, inclusions can be imaged using high-energy, high-contrast, high-resolution X-rays.
"Amber occurs in a range of different colors. As well as the usual yellow-orange-brown that is associated with the color "amber", amber can range from a whitish color through a pale lemon yellow, to brown and almost black. Other uncommon colors include red amber (sometimes known as "cherry amber"), green amber, and even blue amber, which is rare and highly sought after." (Wikipedia)

"The amber nugget, classified as a treasure object and brought to the Buzău County Museum, from Colți, weighs almost 3.5 kilograms and is between 40 and 70 million years old. It was used as a door stop by an old woman from the Colți commune, who never realized how valuable the brown boulder is," the Adevarul says.
"The piece of bleck amber has an inestimable value and that is why increased security measures are needed to move it from one place to another. The largest nugget of Romanian-type amber in the world was transported to the Romanian Peasant Museum on Monday by a team of gendarmes, accompanied by the Buzoian museum team.
"Due to its particularities, Romanian amber was named "Rumanit" by the geologist Oscar Helm, to differentiate it from other types. The inhabitants of the area of the Colţi commune believe that the pieces of amber they find in their mountains are lucky and keep them in their houses. Amber powder was also used in the preparation of tinctures and, mixed with Buzău brandy, was considered to prevent colds."
"Colţi commune and its surroundings constitute the "homeland of amber" and the main attraction of the area is the Amber Museum, unique in Romania. It houses an impressive collection of Romanian," the Haute Culture Magazine says.

Due to its particularities, Romanian amber was named "Romanian" by the geologist Oscar Helm, to differentiate it from other types.
"The most famous field in which amber is used is that of jewelry. Medallions, bracelets, beads, rings and decorative items are made from this resin. At the time when it was industrially extracted from the Colţi mine, the pieces of amber were also processed by the inmates of the former prison in Buzău."
"The interest aroused by the existence of amber deposits in the area, the residents' concerns for the exploitation and processing of this fossilized resin determined the organization of the Colţi Museum Collection, inaugurated on June 14, 1980," the Buzau Museum says.
"Room 1 presents a theme related to the extraction and processing of amber. A separate exhibition segment is dedicated to the scholar Gheorghe Munteanu-Murgoci (1872 -1925) who produced a monograph on amber (succin) deposits, which was also the first teaching thesis of the University of Bucharest (1903). He demonstrated that among the 162 shades of amber known in the world, the Romanian one from Colţi, unique for its black color, is the most valuable for its rarity. During the interwar period, approximately 2000 kg of amber were systematically extracted in Colți commune.
"The uniqueness of this small and charming mountain museum is highlighted by the variety of amber exhibits with translucent, transparent, opaque forms, of various shades that go from yellow to reddish-brown or green-black, in the raw state, processed or in the form of ornaments (necklaces, rings, earrings, pendants). In the history collection of our museum there is the largest Romanian piece in the world, a lump of amber, weighing 3,480 gr, which is on display at the headquarters in Buzău."
"The exhibit of the Buzău County Museum, which weighs almost 3.5 kilograms, has a fabulous story. The largest nugget in the world was discovered by chance by the former director of the museum. The piece of amber was used as a door stop by an old woman originally from Colți, who had no idea that the "boulder" was, in fact, extremely valuable," the Ziarul Natiunea says.
"Far exceeding the age of a million years and currently estimated at over 1 million euros, the Romanian item from the heritage of the Buzău County Museum was used by the old owner as a doorknob. In 1991, the Buzoian woman's house in Bucharest was broken into, and the thief stole a silver necklace that she had on the table and kicked the lump of amber. Since then the nugget has a small chip. In 1998, the heiress of the lump of amber approached the County Museum to sell the "treasure".
"After a laboratory analysis that confirmed the authenticity, the management of the institution would buy the Romanian at "a minimal price". The special value of the lump of Romanian would be confirmed shortly, with the visit of researchers from the Museum of History in Krakow, where there is an important section dedicated to amber. Arriving in Buzau with an exhibition of amber jewelry, the Poles analyzed the nugget and were impressed."
"Years ago, in Colţi, in Buzău county, the largest piece of black amber in the world was extracted from the mountain. The black amber, called Rumanite, is easy to recognize because it has a dark green to black color," the
Campus TV Buzau says.
"The amber nugget, which was exhibited in the Colţi Amber Museum for a certain period, was classified as a treasure object and was brought to the County Museum. It is between 40 and 70 million years old and has an inestimable value. That is why additional safety measures are necessary for its exposure.

"Romania is home to the most valuable amber in the world, named Rumanian amber by Oscar Helm. Gheorghe Munteanu Murgoci is the one who discovered that Romanian is not an incense, as it was believed until then, but a variety of amber. In the comparisons they made between Romanian (Romanian) amber and that from the Baltic Sea, the two researchers concluded that Romanian amber is older, deeper and superior in quality. The mode of formation and orogenic movements also contributed to this. The value of the Romanian Romanian was and is recognized internationally," the the
Union of Professional Journalists from Romania says.
"In 1867, at the Great Universal Exhibition in Paris, Romania was represented by 2 pieces: the Romanian and the "Cloșca cu puii de aur." Both received the Gold Medal. The biggest piece of Rumanian black amber in the world, burnt red in color, weighing 3480 grams, is at the County Museum in Buzau. The exhibit was purchased in 1999 from Elena Mușatescu from Comarnic, Prahova county, who used it as a support to hold the door open.
"In the Colți Museum Collection there are 200 pieces of processed and raw amber, nuggets from tens of grams to hundreds of grams and even kilograms, in 162 shades: yellow, red, brown, very dark brown, black. The star of the exhibition is the Romanian de Colți, black in color."

"The town of Colţi in Buzău is the only one in Romania where amber, the fossilized resin, is found in the streambeds. There are other places within the radius of the commune, such as Strâmba, Faţa Repede, Cățeasca and Dănciuleşti, where very large pieces of amber were found and where the villagers are still looking for it on the surface."
"In the Buzoian commune of Colţi, during the spring, after every rain, the amber seekers appear, who, with the help of pickaxes, like their ancestors, try to find lumps of resin on the banks of the watercourses that they can later transform into jewelry," the Romanian News Agency Agerpres says.
"In the Colţi commune, amber has been harvested since ancient times, but its large-scale exploitation until the end of the 80s considerably reduced the deposits, at this moment amber nuggets are very rare.
"Currently, we know that there are especially local people who in certain areas know that there are still easily accessible deposits to harvest amber, but these places are increasingly difficult to identify, and an industrial exploitation is no longer possible for a long time in the Colţi area. Even today there are still seekers, especially locals, but the phenomenon is no longer extensive or generating significant amounts of resin. It is extracted by harvesting either from the surface or from an easily accessible depth."
