Sibiu, Romania--The Transfăgărășan, also known as DN7C, a mountain road crossing the southern section of the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, stretches 90 kilometres (56 mi) between the highest peaks in the country, Moldoveanu and Negoiu; the road, which climbs to an altitude of 2,042 metres (6,699 ft), has five tunnels, multiple viaducts, 27 tight turns and a 1.1 kilometer long tunnel that includes also 3 turns; the steep hairpin turns, long S-curves, sharp descents, the panoramas of the Fagaras Mountains, winding curves of absolutely spectacular views make Transfagarasan sets the world record for being the World's Most Scenic Mountain Road, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
Ramona Nita, News Editor, World Record Academy: "Seen from the height of the panoramic parking lots dedicated to tourists, the Transfagarasan combines the spectacular of a Formula 1 circuit (in a slightly slower motion version), with a live safari among the dozens of brown bears who sit on the side of the road apparently peacefully waiting for some food from the tourists. Unfortunately, this is now punishable by law; don't get out of the car, keep the windows up, don't honk to not scare the fauna).
"The parking lot on Transfagarasan reserved for small souvenir shops and traditional food products resembles, thanks to the affordable prices, a duty free appeared among the clouds; the picturesque glacial lakes, and the huge waterfall on the route resembles a Swiss landscape (from which marmots, foxes and eagles are not missing either).
"Sometimes, you can sometimes meet shepherds with their flocks going up (at the beginning of summer) to the grazing grounds or going down (autumn) for the winter."
"The Transfăgărășan or DN7C is a paved mountain road crossing the southern section of the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. It has national-road ranking and is the second-highest paved road in the country after the Transalpina.
"It starts near the village of Bascov, near Pitești, and stretches 90 kilometres (56 mi) to the crossroad between the DN1 and Sibiu, between the highest peaks in the country, Moldoveanu and Negoiu. The road, built in the early 1970s as a strategic military route, connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia.
"The road climbs to an altitude of 2,042 metres (6,699 ft), making it the second highest mountain pass in Romania after the Transalpina. It is a winding road, dotted with steep hairpin turns, long S-curves, and sharp descents. It is both an attraction and a challenge for hikers, cyclists, drivers and motorcycle enthusiasts. Due to the topography, the average speed is around 40 km/h (25 mph). The road also provides access to Bâlea Lake and Bâlea Waterfall." (Wikipedia)
"The Transfăgărășan has more tunnels (a total of 5)[4] and viaducts than any other road in Romania. Near the highest point, at Bâlea Lake, the road passes through Bâlea Tunnel, the longest road tunnel in Romania at 884 m (2,900 ft). Along the southern section of the road, near the village of Arefu, is Poenari Castle. The castle was the residence of Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Count Dracula.
"The northern section is used for annual cycling competitions, including the Tour of Romania, and the 22 km (14 mi) section to Bâlea Lake has been used since 2011 for the Sibiu Cycling Tour. These sections are considered to be similar in difficulty to hors catégorie climbs in the Tour de France.
"The Transfăgărășan was featured in a segment of the British TV show Top Gear, in the first episode of Series 14 (November 2009). Host Jeremy Clarkson proclaimed that the Transfăgărășan was "the best road in the world," a title the presenters had previously given to the Stelvio Pass in Italy. The road has also been dubbed "Ceaușescu's Folly". (Wikipedia)
"There are many characteristics that contribute to a great driving road. A string of great corners, probably draped over a mountain. Scintillating views as you ascend or descend. And a nice, remote location to ensure you’ve got it mostly to yourself. The Trasfagarasan Highway in Romania gets a lot of that stuff right. Hundreds of corners, dissecting a section of eye-wateringly pretty Carpathian mountain range, which – yep – is slap-bang in the middle of nowhere," the Top Gear says.
"Stay in the historically fascinating (and quite beautiful) city of Sibiu and you’ll begin the Highway’s 60 miles from the north, with a handful of tree-lined hairpins leading you to the sticker-splattered sign which officially kicks off the Transfagarasan. You’ll know you’ve left your journey too late if there’s already a swarm of cars haphazardly parked around it…
"From here, the road’s pace picks up, and after a dozen or so corners wondering where the scenery is, suddenly everything opens out: the mountain in front of you, probably cloaked in ice-cool mist if you’ve arrived early enough to enjoy the place to yourself. The road may only open in the heat of summer, but you’ll be frantically prodding at the heated seat button if you’re in an MX-5 with the roof down. Trust us."
"When it comes to epic road trips, few journeys rival the breathtaking experience of driving through what is called the most beautiful road in the world – Transfagarasan. Nestled in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains in Romania, this iconic roadway has earned its reputation as “the most beautiful road in the world,” the Postcard Stories Blog says.
"As I embarked on my journey along Transfagarasan, I was immediately struck by the serenity that enveloped me. The road winds through pristine landscapes, revealing views that seem straight out of a fairytale. The landscape’s pristine beauty and untouched tranquility cast a spell that transported me far from the mundane. The scent of pine trees and the crisp mountain air create an atmosphere of tranquility, allowing me to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
"From hairpin bends to panoramic vistas, every twist and turn promises an adventure that lingers in the memory long after the tires have left the pavement. Navigating these curves required both skill and patience, but the reward was well worth it. As I climbed higher, each turn unveiled a new layer of the landscape. Verdant valleys, crystal-clear lakes and mountain tops painted a picture that words could hardly capture."
"Named the “the best road in the world” by the Top Gear team in 2009, Transfagarasan has enjoyed a great popularity among the most beautiful roads in the world since," the
Rolandia says.
"It is the second highest road in Romania and it is known for its spectacular landscapes. This means 151 km of road curves and twists perfectly set for driving enthusiasts, but also for those who want to admire the beauty of nature in a unique location.
"The road links Sibiu to Pitesti and it’s sprinkled with many switchbacks, bridges, viaducts, tunnels and a lot of sights such as Balea Waterfall, Balea Lake, Capra Lake (Goat Lake), Vidraru Dam, Vidraru Lake, Poenari Castle and so on."
"There are not many places that can respond to your desire to overcome yourself and experience unexpected emotions. Transfăgărășan can be a destination of this kind, and we want to convince you that you should not miss such a challenge," the Radio Romania Resita says.
"Located on National Road 7C, it crosses the Făgăraş Mountains, connects Transylvania with Muntenia, climbing to an altitude of 2042m and being the second highest road in Romania, after the Transalpina. It has a length of 92 kilometers, 27 viaducts and bridges and a tunnel of 887 meters, being the longest in the country.
"Transfăgărăşan begins in Bascov commune, Argeş county, near Pitesti town, in the direction of Curtea de Argeş city, and ends at the intersection with the DN1 road between Sibiu and Braşov, near Cârtisoara commune, with a length of 151 km. Among the tourist attractions are Bâlea Lake and Waterfall, Vidraru Lake and Dam, Capra Waterfall, Capra Massif and Lake, Poenari Citadel. To these were added the Bâlea Lac Ice Hotel, open only in winter, the massifs and mountain trails around Transfăgărășan."
"Transfăgărășan is not the work of a construction site, nor of a military construction detachment or genius regiment, nor of a ministry, it is the work of the entire country, reached a stage of development when it could to afford such an effort", said col. (r) Nicolae Mazilu, later brigadier general (r), in his book "The Transfăgărășan Enigma", according to the
Adevarul newspaper.
""This construction made at such a height was not easy at all. But the facts have demonstrated that neither the rocks, nor the heights, nor the blizzard, nor the rain, nor the storm can prevent the achievement of a great work when those who have set this goal are determined to defeat any difficulties", stated former President Nicolae Ceaușescu, with the occasion of the inauguration of the road.
"The Transfăgăraşan crowns a success of the military and civilian builders whose effort went to the point of sacrifice. Some paid with their lives, others were maimed. According to the Ministry of National Defense, 40 people died tragically on the Transfăgărășan construction site."
"Transfagarasan Road is considered to be the most beautiful road in Romania. The spectacular hairpin turns, the panoramas of the Fagaras Mountains and the wonderful sights along it make Transfagarasan an obvious choice for a true holiday. It starts near the village Cartisoara, in Sibiu and stretches for 90 km to Bascov, near Pitesti. The paved mountain road crosses Fagaras, the highest mountains in the country," the Tour In Romania says.
"The most popular place on the Transfagarasan highway is certainly Balea Lake. This is also the highest point along the route and you should not be surprised if you find snow around the lake, even in mid-August. This glacier lake has over 11 meters deep and the area surrounding it has been declared a scientific reserve.
"The Balea Waterfall is only 10 km away from the lake. It is the largest waterfall in steps in Romania, with a fall of 60 m, surrounded by amazing landscape. To reach the waterfall you have to follow a route from Balea Waterfall Chalet, on the edge of Transfăgărăşan Road.
"Vidraru Dam is one of the most impressive dams in Romania and definitely worth stopping for along the way. The dam has a height of over 160 meters and it can store 465 million cubic meters of water. The Transfagarasan road passes over the top of the dam. For an impressive panoramic view of Vidrarul Lake and the Fagaras Mountains, we recommend you to stop at Belvedere platform."
"The drive along the Transfăgărășan Highway was one of the most stunning drives I’ve taken in years and it gave me a wonderful glimpse into Romania’s majestic countryside. A place of sheep herders, men in horse drawn wagons, and women clothed in traditional long dresses. Old churches, stone walls and terra cotta rooftops awash in greenery and flowers were just as I had imagined it would be in the nostalgic Romanian countryside," the ThirdeyeMom says.
"The road twists and turns up to the altitude of 2,042 metres (6,699 ft) with enough hairpin curves to make your stomach leap and adrenalin rush with excitement. Today the Transfăgărășan Highway is one of the most touristic drives in Romania and driving enthusiasts, bikers, hikers, tourists and locals alike flock to this spectacular road making it one of the top scenic drives in the country.
"The start of the Transfăgărășan Highway is relatively tame until you reach the a series of steep, hairpin turns and S-curves climbing up all the way to the top. We could see sheep herders, cattle, and hikers along the way and I was absolutely amazed to see how the weather changed as we approached the top. It went from t-shirt and shorts to freezing cold, cloudy and gray all within a matter of minutes."
The World Record Academy dedicates this record first of all to the memory of the 40 Romanians who fell victim during the construction works; to the Romanian people who, through their sacrifices, contributed to the achievement of many world record goals, which have now become emblematic for Romania: the Palace of the Parliament - the
World's largest administrative palace; Transfagarasan - the
World's most spectacular mountain road, the National Theater Bucharest-
Most theater halls for a single theater world record, the Magurele Laser - the
World's most powerful laser in the world , the
World's First Hyperloop: Henri Coanda's Hyperloop
and many, many others (see our
Romania world records sections).
