Long Beach, Washington, United States--The
Long Beach Peninsula stretches 28 miles along Washington's southwest coast starting close to where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean and it then extends north to the entrance to Gray's Harbor; it’s an easy and scenic drive from both Portland and Seattle as well as a classic Highway 101 destination and part of two scenic byways, which sets the world record for being the
World's Longest Continuous Peninsula Beach, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"It should be called the "World's Longest Continuous Peninsula Beach" because it is the world's longest beach on a peninsula. It stretches 28 miles along Washington's southwest coast starting close to where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean and it then extends north to the entrance to Gray's Harbor," The Seven Wonders of Washington State says.
"To get an eagle's eye view of Long Beach, go to Bell's View in Cape Disappointment State Park. It is a viewing platform constructed at the end of a quarter mile long paved trail along the top of North Head, which is the rocky headland that forms the southern boundary of Long Beach.
"Long Beach is the site of the week long Washington State International Kite Festival held annually during the third week of August. Tens of thousands of spectators enjoy the performances of expert kite fliers that come here from around the world. It is one of the largest kite festivals in North America and probably the closest thing you can experience to Kite Heaven."
"Slow down, unplug, and enjoy all the Washington coast has to offer. The Long Beach Peninsula and Pacific County have an abundance of ultra-fresh seafood, endless beach, northwest rain forests, and unique places to stay. Close to both Portland and Seattle, it’s an easy escape and the perfect place to create traditions that last a lifetime," the visitlongbeachpeninsula.com says.
"The Long Beach Peninsula, in beautiful Pacific County, is located in the very southwest corner of Washington state. It’s an easy and scenic drive from both Portland and Seattle as well as a classic Highway 101 destination and part of two scenic byways.
"Far away from the hustle and bustle of the city is a wonderous place where oyster shooters are the perfect appetizer for every meal, flying a kite is a common pastime, and the world stops so that you can enjoy a beautiful sunset. From exploring museums to crabbing, there is something exciting around every corner in the Long Beach Peninsula. Explore the fun that is in store."
"Long Beach is a city in Pacific County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,688 at the 2020 census. Long Beach was officially incorporated on January 18, 1922. From 1889 to 1930, a narrow-gauge railroad called the Ilwaco Railway and Navigation Company ran up the whole peninsula.
"The Long Beach Razor Clam Festival has been held since 1940. During the event's first year, an 8 foot (2.4 m) wide frying pan used to make the world's largest omelet in 1933 was loaned to the city from Chehalis, Washington.
"The festival cooked a fritter containing 200 pounds (91 kg) of local clams. Long Beach forged a larger pan, the World's Largest Frying Pan, the next year, using it until the late 1940s where it was then displayed in the downtown district as a tourist attraction." (Wikipedia)
"The peninsula is a place that stays with you long after you’ve left. From the moment you breathe in the fresh sea air to the moment you sit fireside gazing at the Milky Way, the endless stretch of beach offers simplicity and natural wonder," the Visit The USA says.
"Located on Washington’s southwest corner, the peninsula’s charming beach villages and relaxed culture create a unique, authentic experience. Rich history, adventure, fabulous food and dramatic landscapes await you on Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula.
"45 kilometers of pristine beach, dramatic basalt cliffs, deep old-growth forests and six state parks make the peninsula a natural wonderland. The beach invites exploration and relaxation. Available activities include horseback riding, bonfires, bike riding, photography and wildlife viewing. Look for humpback whales from the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment State Park.
"Explore the remains of coastal forts. Wrap your arms around giant trees as you hike through the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge. Come during the fall migration for some of the best birding in the region. And don’t miss incredible photo opportunities at the North Head Lighthouse and Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, the oldest functioning lighthouse on the West Coast of the USA. Enjoy panoramic views – and perhaps a vibrant sunset – from the Long Beach Boardwalk."
"The Washington State International Kite Festival (WSIKF) is a week-long kite celebration and competition held annually during the third full week of August since 1981. It is renowned in international kite magazines as one of the best places in the world to fly kites. There is rarely a day that goes by without there being a kite flying on the beach," the
kitefestival.com says.
"Starting on Monday and ending on Sunday, participants and spectators alike will find the skies ablaze with color, high flying action, and choreographed flight pieces. WSIKF is the largest and longest running kite festival in North America located in Long Beach, WA; also known as the “kite flying capital of the United States.”
"WSIKF draws famous kite flyers, designers, builders, and manufacturers from all around the world. With a total draw of around 150,000 people annually, you are sure to be awed by the kite flying adventures."
"The Long Beach Peninsula is an arm of land on the southern coast of the state of Washington in the United States. Entirely within Pacific County, it is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean, the south by the Columbia River, and the east by Willapa Bay. Leadbetter Point State Park and Willapa National Wildlife Refuge are at the northern end of the peninsula and Cape Disappointment is at the southern end, with Pacific Pines State Park located in between.
"Cape Disappointment State Park west of Ilwaco, part of the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, was the westernmost terminus for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. A monument designed by Maya Lin as part of the Confluence Project[1] was dedicated there in 2005.
"The Long Beach Peninsula is known for its continuous sand beach 28 miles (45 km) in extent on the Pacific Ocean side, claimed to be the longest beach in the United States. It is a popular vacation destination for people from Seattle, Washington (165 miles (266 km) distant) and Portland, Oregon (115 miles (185 km) distant)." (Wikipedia)
"“World’s Longest Beach” sits pretty above the driver, perfectly framing the distant horizon. While technically true, Long Beach is actually the world’s longest drivable beach, the longest beach on a Peninsula, and the longest beach in the United States, but it takes third place when it comes to the longest beaches in the world," the Explore Washington State says.
"Technicalities aside, this place has much more to offer than just a record-breaking stretch of sand. Fresh seafood awaits around every corner from smoked salmon chowder at Captain Bob’s and Dungeness crab eggs benedict at Benson’s by the Beach to oysters and pickled fish at Adrift Hotel’s restaurant with a view.
"It’s truly something else, walking through the grassy dunes to the point where the continental United States ends and the powerful Pacific begins. Here, the beach has a horizon of its own, often softened by a cloud of salt spray. There are seven public beach approaches within the city limits; park where the sand meets the pavement and walk to the water’s edge, or roll down your windows, shift into four-wheel drive, and cruise from the comfort of your vehicle.
"Long Beach is an official Washington State Highway with a 25 mph speed limit, so drive away your worries, but remember, the rules of the road still apply! My advice is to drive to a spot you like, park so your tailgate opens up to the waves, break out the salmon chowder from Captain Bob’s and fresh sourdough bread from the Cottage Bakery, and enjoy a mouth-watering meal with a view (without the price tag)."
"The town of Long Beach is located on the 28-mile Long Beach Peninsula. This family friendly community, features carnival rides, a full calendar of annual festivals, kite shops, video arcades, the World Kite Museum & Hall of Fame, bumper cars, and many more family-oriented activities," the Scenic Washington says.
"In summer, the town provides clowns, face-painting and other sidewalk entertainment for visitors, from juggling clowns to Mother Goose and lots of kid-friendly crafts and activities, as well as horse-drawn wagon rides.
"Pristine ocean beaches lie alongside the town and visitors stroll the dunes on a popular boardwalk. Crossing beneath the Boardwalk is the 8.1-mile long Discovery Trail, which travels through dunes from north Long Beach into Ilwaco. Lewis & Clark reached the Pacific Ocean here and the trail is one of many monuments to them throughout the town."
