Seattle, Washington, United States--The Hat ‘n’ Boots Premium Tex gas station built at 6800 Corson Avenue S on the corner of E Marginal Way near Georgetown was canopied by a giant cowboy hat measuring 44 feet in diameter, and the restrooms are housed in boots standing 22 feet tall; moved to the new Oxbow Park, it sets the world record for being the World's Largest Hat and Cowboy Boots Sculpture, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"Hat 'n' Boots is a roadside attraction and landmark in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Built in 1954 as part of a Western-themed gas station, it is billed as the largest hat and cowboy boots in America.
"To preserve this landmark, the City of Seattle moved the Hat 'n' Boots to the new Oxbow Park in December 2003. Hat 'n' Boots appeared in the films National Lampoon's Vacation (during the opening credits) and Hype!" (Wikipedia)
"Oxbow Park is located in the heart of historic Georgetown. In 1953, Seattle artist Lewis Nasmyth was hired to "rustle up" a design for a western-style gas station in Georgetown," the official website says.
"Featuring a 44-ft. wide cowboy hat and 22-ft. high boots, the Hat n' Boots opened the next year to a stampede of customers. In fact, for a time it was the biggest selling station in the state. Legend has it even Elvis dropped by when he was in town during the World's Fair in '62.
"But in the early 60's, a brand new interstate, I-5, started diverting traffic away from the station. By the late 80's it pretty much looked like trail's end for the Hat n' Boots. That's when some Georgetown residents saddled up to rescue the soul of their community.
"The Hat n' Boots is as important to Georgetown as the Golden Gate Bridge is to San Francisco," says Allan Phillips, former director of the Georgetown Community Council. "If the Hat n' Boots were ever to be gone from Georgetown, it would be like losing our soul."
"Seattle and Washington as a whole have long been known for their oddities. These days there aren’t quite as many, but there are still a few relics from our city’s unique past. That includes the largest cowboy hat in the country and overall one of the largest hats in the entire world. Yes, it’s here in Seattle and not in Texas," the
Curiocity.com says.
"Chances are that you’ve been to Seattle’s Georgetown, it has plenty of great spots to eat, shops, and historic buildings. It’s also the home of Hat n’ Boots, a beloved local sculpture that now rests in Oxbow Park. But why is it there in the first place?
"Due to its unique nature, it became one of Washington’s most popular gas stations, but eventually was abandoned in 1988. Luckily for all of us, the neighbors of Georgetown fought hard to save the relics and they’re now safe in Oxbow Park."
"The cap-tivating Hat n’ Boots have become icons of the Emerald City, but look ridiculously out of place in the nascent Oxbow Park, just down the road from the Big Spider – and not just because of the surprising deft of cattle rearers in the area," the
Land of the Bigs says.
"The fedorable Big Hat would measure 19 feet high and 44 feet across, with Lew singlehandedly bending each of the 24 cantilevered beams. The cowboy boots were a true feet of modern engineering, with the weight of public expectation spurring Lew towards greatness.
"One was 21.5 feet high, painted light blue, with room inside for cowgirls. The other, slightly taller at 24 feet and painted dark blue, was for the cowboys. Lew put his heart and sole into his work, spending hours manipulating the boots’ steel mesh structure so they’d look like John Wayne had just kicked them off."
"Touted as the largest cowboy hat and boots in America, these pieces of massive rancher apparel made their debut in the 1950s in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood as part of a western-themed gas station called Hat ‘n’ Boots. The 44-foot-wide hat was designed to hold the gas station’s office while the 22-foot-tall boots served as the restrooms," the Atlas Obscura says.
"The themed attraction quickly lassoed in herds of tourists. For a time, it was the most successful gas station in the entire state. According to legend, Elvis Presley even stopped by when he was in the area for the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962.
"The iconic attraction was moved to Georgetown’s Oxbow Park in 2003. The boots were restored in 2005; the hat finally completed in 2010. Plans are currently in the works to turn the hat into an interpretive exhibit brimming with the history of Hat ‘n’ Boots and its importance to the local area."
"These two sculptures of a giant cowboy hat and boots originally embellished a Georgetown gas station in the 1950s – the hat was the pay kiosk, and the boots were the toilets," the Lonely Planet says.
"Obsolete by the 1990s, they lay rotting until foresighted community activists rescued and relocated them to this small local park. Full refurbishments were completed in 2010, meaning the comical cowboy behemoths now look as kitschy as they did in 1954."
"On March 20, 1956, Lewis H. Nasmyth receives U.S. Patent No. 177,189 for a "new, original, and ornamental design for an article of manufacture," the HistoryLink.com says.
"The article in question is the Hat ‘n’ Boots Premium Tex gas station built in 1955 at 6800 Corson Avenue S on the corner of E Marginal Way near Georgetown.
"The station office is canopied by a giant cowboy hat measuring 44 feet in diameter, and the restrooms are housed in boots standing 22 feet tall. The original station has nine pump islands fed by two underground 10,000-gallon fuel tanks."
