Winlock, Washington, United States--The current white egg sculpture in Winlock, Washington was made by
Beverly Roberts and serves as a visual centerpiece of the town’s history; the new 1,200 lb (540 kg) sculpture was part of the Winlock Egg Day Parade before it was placed in the
Vern Zander Memorial Park on top of a 10 feet (3.0 m) steel support, setting the new world record for the
World's Largest Egg Sculpture, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"The gem of the Washington city of Winlock is a massive egg that has lasted for almost a hundred years in multiple incarnations. The Winlock Egg was first built in the 1920s to celebrate the area’s booming egg industry. Constructed out of canvas drawn over a wooden frame, the oversized ovum was paraded around on a float before being covered in plaster and put on permanent display," the Atlas Obscura says.
"Unfortunately, the flimsy construction was not to last and the first egg was eventually replaced with a plastic recreation in the 40’s. Much like a chicken fetus, the egg continued to evolve and was again replaced by a fiberglass model in the 60’s. However, this version was thought to look too much like a football and the current cement edition was finally constructed in 1991.
"Deemed the “World’s Largest Egg” by Ripley’s Believe It or Not in 1989, the Winlock Egg is a beloved attraction and was even painted red, white, and blue after 9/11, making it the area’s de facto memorial to the tragedy. The egg has since been repainted its original white color and remains a “eggs-celent” roadside attraction."
"On August 13, 1921 a road between Winlock and Cowlitz Corner was completed. There was a big celebration commemorating the event, and since Winlock was becoming quite a famous poultry center, they decided to call the celebration "Winlock Poultry and Egg Day," the Winlock Egg Days says.
"There were about 1,000 people present at the celebration. Otis Roundtree was the General Chairman for the event. After the celebration, it was decided to make this an annual event, which was done.
"Wow! We are incredibly grateful to all our 2024 supporters! Your support has been amazing! Are you excited to show your support in 2025? Let's make 2025 even better!"
"The original “big white egg” was part of a parade float – it was stuck on the back of a big truck with a sign that said, “Winlock, home of the white leghorn,” the
MyNorthwest.com says.
"The parade was actually a caravan of hundreds of vehicles that drove from Olympia to Salem, Oregon, on Oct. 25, 1923 – 98 years ago this week – marking the official opening of what was then called the Pacific Highway. The road was described at the time as “700 miles of pavement from British Columbia to Northern California,” and it later became US 99, many parts of which still exist.
"The idea for the big egg is attributed to John C. Lawrence, manager of the Washington Cooperative Egg and Poultry Association, which was based in Winlock. In a speech a full eight months before the parade, Lawrence referred to Winlock as “home of the big white egg” – likely meaning the large but entirely edible eggs Winlock was already then widely known for."
"Winlock was a major producer of eggs for much of the 20th century, shipping its poultry products throughout the world and creating a name for itself. Today, the town pays tribute to that history in several ways," the Discover Lewis County says.
"Egg Days, the city’s two-day summer festival generally held in June, pays tribute to that history with a parade, car show and the annual tradition of feeding a free egg salad sandwich lunch to visitors.
"The World’s Largest Egg — so confirmed by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! — serves as a visual centerpiece of the town’s history and currently displays its 12th Man pride for the Seattle Seahawks."

"Winlock is a city in Lewis County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,472 at the 2020 census. It was named after territorial army general, Winlock M. Miller, who briefly resided there.
"Winlock is mostly famous for having the World's Largest Egg, reflecting its former status as a major producer of eggs. Early in its history, Winlock attracted many immigrants from Finland, Germany, and Sweden." (Wikipedia)
"The Winlock Egg was listed as the world's largest egg by Ripley's Believe It or Not! in 1989. The current structure is the fourth reincarnation of the original egg.
"The first egg was built for a celebration of the opening of the Pacific Highway Bridge over the Columbia River between Washington and Oregon. The idea of an egg came from John G. Lawrence, the manager of the newly formed egg and poultry co-op as a way to represent the growing industry centered in Winlock in the 1920s. During that time farmers in Winlock were shipping as much as a quarter million cases of eggs to market a year.
"The first egg was made of an egg shaped wood frame stretched with canvas and painted white. It was mounted onto a truck as part of a parade of floats and vehicles that traveled from Olympia, Washington to Salem, Oregon on October 23, 1923, to celebrate the expansion of trade between Washington and Oregon through the railroad. After the parade, the egg was placed on a platform near the train depot, and has since remained a source of local pride."

"The first egg was covered with plaster and measured 12 feet (3.7 m) long, with a maximum diameter of 8 feet (2.4 m). After 20 years in the elements, the 2,000 lb (910 kg) egg had deteriorated and was replaced by a plastic version made by a new company to the area, the Johnny Simpson's Plastic Company.
"This version lasted until 1958 when it fell from its rotted platform and cracked. A fiberglass replacement was made but not installed until 1965. Weighing in at 1,500 pounds (680 kg), the fiberglass egg was 15 feet (4.6 m) in length but there were concerns that it was shaped too much like a football. The community created a fenced park,
Vern Zander Memorial Park, around the attraction and the egg was labeled with a sign denoting it as the world's largest egg.
"Another fiberglass replacement egg was installed in 1991. The new 1,200 lb (540 kg) sculpture was part of the Winlock Egg Day Parade before it was placed in the Vern Zander Memorial Park on top of a 10 feet (3.0 m) steel support. The egg, in the 21st century, has been painted to reflect certain interests or events, including being depicted as a red, white, and blue American flag after the 9/11 attacks and decorated with the Seattle Seahawks logo in the 2010s." (Wikipedia)
"This sculpture of twelve feet long & 1,200 lbs heavy giant egg is located in Winlock, Washington. Winlock was America's second largest egg producing town until the 1950s, and local egg pride remains strong. The first big egg was fashioned from canvas by town boosters in 1923, part of a celebration around the opening of the Pacific Highway," the Waymarking says.
"A plastic version replaced it in 1944. In the 1960s, the egg was upgraded to a fiberglass model, which lasted until the early 1990s. A local chicken hatcheryman, Vern L. Zander, funded the most recent egg before his death in 1993. Winlock holds its Egg Day festival on the third weekend in June.
"The current egg was made by Beverly Roberts, on October 24, 1990. The new egg was to be completed by parade time the following May."
"On August 13, 1921, about 1,000 Winlock residents assembled to celebrate the completion of the first concrete road between Winlock and Cowlitz Corner. The event was called the Winlock Poultry and Egg Day, and it was so well received that the town decided they should hold a similar celebration each year. For the past 100 years, Egg Day has been celebrated in Winlock, except for four years during World War II," the History Link says.
"To mark its place in egg history, Winlock created a big egg out of canvas, built in 1923 as part of a float used in an inauguration celebration for the new Pacific Highway. The parade route stretched from Olympia to Salem, Oregon. That year Winlock farmers shipped 260,000 cases of eggs to market from more than one-half million hens.
"The 100th Egg Day was held June 18-20, 2021. The centennial celebration included a car show, book sale, live music, parade, egg-salad sandwiches, and a hard-boiled-egg-eating contest. The Egg Day Royalty Court arrived in a Royal Egg Coach; town mayor Brandon Svenson was one of the Royal Egg coachmen."
