Gladstone, North Dakota, United States--The sculpture "Geese in Flight" by Gary Greff in Gladstone, North Dakota, United States, is located conveniently off of I-94, and is easily accessible to visitors; more than 300 lengths of pipe were used to create this massive piece of art; the completed sculpture weighs in at 78.8 tons (or approximately 157,660 pounds, setting the world record for being the World's Largest Scrap Metal Sculpture, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"No road trip through North Dakota is complete without a drive along the Enchanted Highway. Luckily for you, this unique roadside attraction also features another world’s largest thing," the Olio In Iowa says.
"Named the world’s largest scrap metal sculpture by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2002, the sculpture Geese in Flight is truly a sight to behold. More than 300 lengths of pipe were used to create this massive piece of art. Unsurprisingly, the completed sculpture weighs in at 78.8 tons (or approximately 157,660 pounds).
"Located conveniently off of I-94, Geese in Flight is easily accessible to visitors. It’s also the perfect place for a quick photo op if you don’t have time to drive the full length of the highway."
"The First sculpture "Geese in Flight" is right on Interstate 94 at Exit 72, this would be the beginning of the Enchanted Highway if you are headed south. All the large metal sculptures are placed along the county Highway 21 and each have a parking area and kiosk for travelers to get off the roadway and view the scrap metal art," the North Dakota Tourism says.
"Sculptures include "Geese in Flight," "Deer Crossing," "Grasshoppers in the Field," "Fisherman's Dream," "Pheasants on the Prairie," "Theodore Roosevelt Rides Again," and "World's Largest Tin Family."
"If you look at the distances, there are two sculptures in the first 15 miles headed south and those happen in the first 3 miles. The second half or bottom 15 miles of the highway contain the rest of the sculptures and they are all less than five miles apart. This is why I advise against only doing some of the highway from Interstate 94 because you will miss most of the sculptures."
"The Enchanted Highway is a collection of the world's largest scrap metal sculptures constructed by Gary Greff at intervals along a 32-mile (51 km) stretch of a two-lane highway in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of North Dakota.
"The road has no highway number, although its northern portion is 100+1⁄2th Avenue SW (counting from Bismarck, ND, which is 85 miles [137 km] to the east). The Enchanted Highway extends north from Regent to the Gladstone exit on Interstate 94 east of Dickinson. Each sculpture has a developed pull-out and several have picnic shelters; the highway passes through scenic farm country with intermittent buttes. Geese in Flight is visible from I-94, standing 110 feet tall and 150 feet wide. In 2002, it was recognized as the world's largest scrap metal sculpture by the Guinness Book of World Records.
"Local artist Gary Greff conceived of the project and began building it in 1989, and continues to maintain the sculptures.[4] He took inspiration from local wildlife and historical figures, including Theodore Roosevelt.[5] Greff's intention was to revive his hometown of Regent, after decades of population and economy decline. In 2012, Greff opened a motel, The Enchanted Castle, in Regent, continuing the theme of the Enchanted Highway. The State of North Dakota provided $75,000 in its 2019-2020 budget to assist Greff in maintaining the sculptures; prior to that year, he had used his own money and donations to pay for upkeep. The highway attracts approximately 6,000 tourist cars per year." (Wikipedia)
"The world’s largest metal sculpture, completed by Gary Greff (USA) in August 2001, stands 110 ft (33.5m) tall, is 154 ft (46.9m) wide and weighs 157,659 lb (71,512.91 kg)," the Guinness World Records says.

"Entitled Geese in Flight , the sculpture resembles Canadian geese flying against a backdrop of sky and prairie and is one of a series of metal sculptures located along the Enchanted Highway between Gladstone and Regent, North Dakota, USA. Greff began his project in 1990.
"His other artwork along the highway includes a tin family, metal grasshoppers, a pheasant family and Theodore Roosevelt on a horse. Another project, involving giant metal fish, is scheduled to be completed in late 2002."
"Travel along I-94 through western North Dakota and you can't fail to notice this huge sculpture by the Gladstone exit (72)," the Roadtrip America says.
"Officially recognized as the World's Largest Scrap Metal Sculpture, 'Geese In Flight' is just one of the amazing series of outdoor artworks created by local artist Gary Greef with the aim of tempting people to visit the town of Regent, 32-miles south.
"If you go: Seven sculptures currently line the route, now known as the Enchanted Highway, and subjects range from fish and pheasants to deer and grasshoppers. A further three are planned."
"At 110 feet in height, 154 feet in width, and weighing 157,659 pounds, Geese in Flight by Gary Greff is the world’s largest scrap-metal sculpture!" the Bill Beaver Project says.
"Apart from its beauty and record-breaking size, Geese in Flight is backed by one enchanting story! As many small towns across the country dwindled into ghost towns, their residents moving to big cities, sculptor Gary Greff wanted a different fate for his hometown of Regent, North Dakota! Inspired by the movie, Field of Dreams, he decided to build something extraordinary to encourage visitors to take the 30-mile detour off I-94!
"Mr. Greff created seven enormous metal sculptures leading to his hometown, from giant grasshoppers to Teddy Roosevelt on horseback! Geese in Flight was completed in June of 2001, immediately earning its place in the Guinness Book of World Records, and the town of Regent has earned its place as a world-class destination at the end of the Enchanted Highway!"
"The Enchanted Highway, a 32 mile stretch of highway, features some of the world’s largest scrap metal sculptures," the Enchanted Castle says.
"The sculpture “Geese in Flight”, is currently listed in the Guinness World Book of Records as the Largest Scrap Metal Sculpture in the entire world!
"The highway consists of 6 extremely large metal sculptures depicting geese, deer, pheasants, grasshoppers, Teddy Roosevelt, and even a complete Tin Family. Hotel owner and artist responsible for this awesome creation, is Regent native Gary Greff."

"Seven enormous metal sculptures (standing four to five stories high) decorate the 32-mile stretch between the towns of Gladstone and Regent, North Dakota. This is the Enchanted Highway," the Travel North Dakota says.
"The awesome sculptures and the vision and resolve of artist Gary Greff, have been heralded from Nickelodeon to People Magazine. Most recently, the Enchanted Highway was featured in American Road magazine.
"The largest sculpture, Geese in Flight, is noted in the Guinness World Records as the largest metal sculpture in the world. It weighs 78.8 tons and measures 110 feet in height and 154 feet in width. The Enchanted Highway is a fun, free addition to your North Dakota road trip."
"This is one of those things that’s very nice to do on long travels between Fargo and Montana. Take an hour for it and adjust your route back to the 94. There are 8 metal sculptures of various things along the 2 lane road, plus a few other things to do – a maze, some playground equipment, a ship and a stage coach to sit in. At the end of the road there is a town with a gift shop and a hotel in the form of a castle. It’s definitely something different and fun."
"Fun surprises every few miles! We happened to be spending an extra day in Dickinson and so glad we had this on our itinerary! Thoroughly entertaining and so impressive! If you have the time worth the drive! Very enjoyable day!"
"This is a must when traveling through North Dakota! We saw the collection of the world’s largest scrap metal. The “Geese in Flight” is in the Guinness Book of World Records and the 32 miles of these sculptures begins on exit 72 off of Interstate 94. This was so cool and it was so fun to just make this part of our journey."
"After leaving Medora on our road trip, we said we’d at least stop and check out the first sculptor on the Enchanted Highway before continuing on East. But… after we saw the first one in all of its enormity, we HAD to drive all the way to Regent to see them all! What a beautiful drive down! Each time we left a sculptor, we looked forward to seeing the next! It’s too bad the little town of Regent hasn’t benefited more from the visitors."
"Enchanted Highway was a very unique experience. The sculptor accompanied our group and we were treated with a description of each of the seven larger than life sculptures. The highway ended in the small town of Regent where there’s a gift shop and ice cream."
