Dothan, Alabama, United States--A giant scrap-metal hog located on Ross Clark Circle, in Dothan, Alabama, United States, was made to advertise a feed mill; built by Larry and Ronald Godwin, the pig is 26 feet long by about 13 feet tall and made from scrap steel; the pig' sets the world record for being the World's Largest Hog Sculpture, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"Original sign read “Going Whole Hog for Bob’s Feeds”! The hog was constructed around around 1967 by L. Godwin and featured a moving head. It is roughly 13 ft. high and 26 ft. long and used as advertising," the Vacations Alabama says.
"The hog is made of round steel rods and steel sheets ! It now boast a sign behind it that says Dothan Recycling."
"Dothan claims to be the Peanut Capital of the World, and the Godwin brothers began to create large animal sculptures in conjunction with the annual Peanut Festival. This included a 28-foot-long animated catfish, with swishing tail, moving eyes, and flapping gills; and a 24-foot-long steel bull with a hammered aluminum surface," the Roadside America says.
"The pig was labeled "Emfinger Steel," apparently a previous employer; we are informed by tipster Jennifer Roberts that "The land was sold by Ginger Emfinger Lucas to W. R. Strickland from Birmingham, AL - Emfinger Steel is not associated with Mr. Strickland or any business that he owns."
"The pig's current sponsor, a scrap metal recycling business, has named the pig "Schnitzer." The porker is painted in the colors of either Auburn or Alabama, depending on which team wins the annual Iron Bowl game."
"World's Largest Hog Statue, Dothan (unofficial). This scrap-metal hog built in 1967 was made to advertise a feed mill," the AL.com says.
"The hog, located on Ross Clark Circle, is 26 feet long and 13 feet high."
"The Monument to the Hog looks west towards the highway from a break in the tree line," the Born and Raised in the South says.
"The business in the nearest building seemed abandoned, though an old railroad track under the overpass was still in operation. When we stopped, the porcine scrap metal sculpture was wrapped in strings of Christmas tree lights."
"In the heart of Dothan, Ala., the Peanut Capital of the World, where more than half of the peanuts in America are grown, you’ll find the National Peanut Festival," the Fifty Grande says.
"This is 10 days of what is essentially a ginormous state fair in celebration of peanuts. Like at any state fair, this peanut party rages on the local fairgrounds, where the floor is dirt and the food is fried. Classic carnival rides populate the skyline and the sounds of live country music and crowds cheering for street-style entertainment cloud the airwaves.
"If you love the farming heritage of the American South (or an old fashioned, southern-style hullabaloo), you’ll enjoy the overflow of agricultural demos, like livestock showcases, pig racing and wood carving. Make sure to watch people put the peanuts to good use at the National Peanut Festival Recipe Contest."
"This Pig was built around 1967 by Larry and Ronald Godwin. The pig is 26 feet long by about 13 feet tall and made from scrap steel. The pig's head used to move from side to side. The sculpture was created for a feed mill. The sign originally read "Going Whole Hog for Bob's Feeds", the Roadside Architecture says.
