Arthur, Nebraska, United States--The First Arthur County Courthouse and Jail, located at Marshall St. between Fir and Elm Sts. in Arthur, Nebraska, was built as the first government buildings in newly formed Arthur County; was designed by a J.S. Noll with some elements of Italianate style and sets the world record for being the World's Smallest Courthouse, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"The First Arthur County Courthouse and Jail, was perhaps the smallest court house in the United States, and serves now as a museum.
"Located at Marshall St. between Fir and Elm Sts. in Arthur, Nebraska, the 26-by-28-foot (7.9 m × 8.5 m) courthouse building was built in 1914, and the jail was built in 1915, as the first government buildings in newly formed Arthur County. The courthouse was designed by a J.S. Noll with some elements of Italianate style. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990; the listing included two contributing buildings." (Wikimedia)
"The log cabin you can see in Arthur was set up as a line camp and used by Frank North and Buffalo Bill’s operation. “Most of the time, they wintered bulls there,” Macomber said. “They dug a lake to have a water source. Later, the ground changed hands to the North brothers," the 1011Now says.
"The cabin was actually lived in until 1942. Old Charlie Kramer and his family, they still lived there, and finally moved another house in. So it was occupied a lot of years.” The “line camp” served cowboys working the range. “The different cowboys that worked for the ranch, would ride and kick cattle back on to the proper ground or area,” Macomber said. “These cabins would be a place where they were riding, and they could spend the night there, find some shelter, and get supplies.”
"The cabin is apparently all original, and is amazing that it still stands today. The people of Arthur encourage to you come by for a visit to the cabin. You can also enjoy the baled straw church in town, and what was once the smallest courthouse in America. Be sure to have a meal at the Bunkhouse while you’re in town as well."
"Finished in 1915 and costing only $900, the courthouse was essentially a wood shack with no plumbing or modern conveniences. It spanned only 26 x 28 feet. Soon the village of Arthur was the center of rural life, with homesteaders coming from miles around to buy goods, go to church, attend schools and settle disputes," the Atlas Obscura says.
"At its height, the population of Arthur County grew to over 2,500 people. But during the depression and drought of the 1930s, many people left the area and the population fell dramatically. This decline in population meant that the miniature courthouse was able to serve the farming community for 48 years, until a bigger one was finally built in 1961.
"In 1990, the courthouse and two supporting structures, including the jail, were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cute courthouse is so tiny that it was once honored by Ripley’s “Believe it or Not” as the smallest courthouse in the world. Today, this charming throwback is a museum run by the Arthur County Historical Society."
"Arthur County is among those areas in Nebraska that carry the distinction of being land that has been under the flag of three different countries at one time or another. With the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the area finally became part of the United Statest," the Official Nebraska Government website says.
"The courthouse that was built in 1914 and served the citizens for the next 48 years gained notoriety for possibly being the smallest courthouse in the United States. It was replaced by the county's present courthouse in 1962.
"It became clear to the inhabitants of the area that separate counties and separate county seats were needed. A letter appearing in the March 13, 1913 edition of the Hustler, Arthur County's first legal publication, noted "For the number of people and to dispense justice and liberty, would it not be best to make two counties and let Arthur County come back on the map!"
"Arthur boasts what is believed to be the world’s smallest courthouse," the Western Nebraska Tourism Coalition says.
"The 26-by-28-foot white frame building was built a year after Arthur County seceded from McPherson County in 1913. Though it still stands, it was replaced with a larger courthouse in 1961."
"Now the Arthur County Museum, it's a wood shack that served as the Arthur County Court House until 1961.
"Built in 1914 for $900, the court house is a wood shack with no plumbing. It spans 26 x 28 feet. It served as the Arthur County Court House until 1961; now it's the Arthur County Museum." the Roadside America says.
"The building faces north and is a a one story two room white colored clapboard structure. The building is located on spacious landscaped grounds in the center of Arthur on the east side of the courthouse," the
courthouse.co says.
"The square shaped building has a hipped roof with parapet at the top. The building features roof cresting (replacement), tiny brackets, an unadorned sawtooth cornice, corner pilasters, and simple moulded lintels.
"This former Prairie courthouse was used until the current county courthouse was built in 1961. When it was being used it was officially the smallest courthouse in the nation. It is really a neat place on the inside."
