Milford, Nebraska, United States--The World’s first covered wagon-shaped gas station in Milford, Nebraska, was the vision of Kenneth R. Dahle; the gas station wagon measured 50 feet long and 50 feet high, with its "canopy" made of white roofing shingles over seven laminated wooden arches; four 24-foot-tall wheels were bolted to the four corners of the building which sets the world record for being the World’s first covered wagon-shaped gas station, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"The World’s Largest Covered Wagon was the vision of Kenneth R. Dahle, who bought the land next to the interstate in 1964. He first built a campground (“Westward Ho!”), then, later, a gas station. In 1976 he began work on this masterpiece, the giant covered wagon, completing it two years later in 1978," the Silly America says
"The piece of programmatic architecture was designed to replicate the old covered wagons that crossed the Nebraska plains on the Oregon and Mormon Trails in the 1800s. And it did a mighty fine job at that.
"It’s hard to say how long the big wagon will remain in Milford. It’s been more than 20 years since the fueling station shuttered. It’s since lost its wheels, its muffler man, and its purpose. Roadside attractions, sometimes, come and go, and many are from the state of their glory days. So be sure to visit while you can, because you never know what the future holds for them."
"First, Dahle opened a campground on the property named "Westward Ho!" and built big wooden teepees. In 1971 he constructed a gas station across the street -- cleverly designed by Dahle so it could later be expanded into his giant prairie schooner. He finally began work on the wagon in the spring of 1976, and two years later it was complete.
"The gas station wagon measured 50 feet long and 50 feet high, with its "canopy" made of white roofing shingles over seven laminated wooden arches. Four 24-foot-tall wheels, each assembled from what Dahle claimed were 1,000 pieces of wood, were bolted to the four corners of the building. Dahle hoped to build a giant pair of oxen and never got around to it, but he later added a cowboy Muffler Man," the Roadside America says.
"Dale died in 1993. By 1998 the gas station had closed. The giant wheels were gone by 2000. In 2001 the cowboy Muffler Man was sold to a Western outfitter in Wyoming (and given a mustache). The figure later moved to Cody, WY, then Billings, MT, and in 2018 to Pomeroy, WA. The wagon remains in Milford, awaiting a 21st century pioneer with the vision and skills to build four giant wheels and an ox or two."
"We checked out the Covered Wagon on our trip to North Platte. The building is designed to look like an old covered wagon that crossed the Nebraska plains during the 1800s as part of the Oregon and Mormon Trails," the Walking Tourists says.
"The building near the Milford exit was once home to a gas station. I remember stopping there years ago. Now, it’s home to a golf shop. The parking lot was full of campers, golf carts and other miscellaneous items.
"It’s amazing the roadside attractions that you can take in when driving across a state. I’ve learned that if you see something and you want to check it out, do it. Your destination will still be there. Plus, you may miss out on an opportunity. That happened with the dinosaur that was nearby. Milford was home to a dinosaur museum and had a T-Rex near Interstate 80 to hype it. I’ve learned that the museum has closed and the dino was removed from its spot."
"In 1964 Kenneth R. Dahle bought land next to the new interstate exit in Milford. Even at that time, he said later, he envisioned building a giant covered wagon next to the freeway. He finally began work on the wagon in the spring of 1976, and two years later it was complete," the Destination Small Town says.
"The gas station wagon measured 50 feet long and 50 feet high, with its "canopy" made of white roofing shingles over seven laminated wooden arches.
"Four 24-foot-tall wheels, each assembled from what Dahle claimed were 1,000 pieces of wood, were bolted to the four corners of the building. Dahle hoped to build a giant pair of oxen and never got around to it, but he did later add a cowboy Muffler Man.
"Cool place to stop. It’s much more of a building than a wagon, but still impressively large and a fun stop on a long road trip."
