New Castle, Indiana, United States--New Castle High School, a public high school in New Castle, Indiana whose name is commonly abbreviated to NCHS, has the largest and finest high school gymnasium in the world; after increasing its capacity to 8,424 seats, it set the world record for being the World's Largest High School Basketball Gym, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"A large sign is proudly on display in the south end that the New Castle Fieldhouse is the largest and finest high school gymnasium in the world. The official count was 9,325 and for the next 60 years that was the case, but something happened during the anniversary year that knocked the capacity down a couple of notches to number three on the list," the Stadium Journey says.
"In January 2021, New Castle installed 260 telescoping seats on the west concourse and installed 335 additional seats in portable bleachers, increasing its capacity to 8,424. That number surpasses Seymour’s capacity of 8,228 and once again places the New Castle Fieldhouse as the biggest high school gym in the world.
"The history of the boy’s basketball program consists of 60 sectional, 19 regional, 4 semi-state, and 2 state championships in the team’s century of high school hoops. The Fieldhouse gets large crowds from time to time, most notably during sectional contests that as recently as March 2019, saw close to 10,000 people witness semi-final games."
"The largest high school basketball gyms in the United States refers to gymnasiums primarily used by secondary schools for basketball purposes. 14 of the 16 largest high school gymnasiums are located in the state of Indiana.
"In March 2019, The Indianapolis Star reported that the Indiana High School Basketball Historical Society had done research through actual on-site counts, conducting personal interviews, and reviewing architectural blueprints to confirm the accuracy of the list of the largest high school gyms in Indiana. This research confirmed a reordering of the top three sites was necessary, moving Seymour's Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium to the top spot. The previous #1, New Castle's Fieldhouse, was moved to third. But when the Fieldhouse was renovated in 2020, its seating capacity was increased from 7,829 to 8,424, enabling New Castle to reclaim the #1 spot.
"New Castle High School is a public high school in New Castle, Indiana whose name is commonly abbreviated to NCHS. It is part of the New Castle Community School Corporation and has an enrollment of approximately 1,200 students. NCHS is the largest high school in Henry County." (Wikipedia)
"The New Castle Fieldhouse, known as Chrysler Fieldhouse when it opened on Nov. 21, 1959, is one of the main attractions for any high school basketball fan. For years, the seating capacity, which included portable bleachers that were used for big tournament games, was listed at 9,325," the Indy Star reports.
"But those bleachers became unnecessary after going unused for many years and the school sold them. The official capacity, without the temporary bleachers, dipped under 8,000. But as part of a renovation project last year, the New Castle added seats on the concourse and a new set of portable bleachers to raise the capacity to 8,424 and again push the fieldhouse to its perch as the largest high school gym in the state.
"The fieldhouse has been home to many great players over the years, including 1973 Mr. Basketball Kent Benson and 1983 Mr. Basketball Steve Alford, both who went on to play at Indiana. The fieldhouse also annually hosts the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Classic each year between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, featuring four top girls’ teams and four top’ boys teams in the state."
"With a capacity of 9,325, the New Castle Fieldhouse seats more fans than the homes of current college basketball Top 25 programs Duke, Northern Iowa, Notre Dame, SMU and VCU," the
Yahoo Sports says.
"That's made all the more incredible by the fact that the central Indiana facility is home to a high school team.
"The New Castle (Ind.) Trojans have played in the world's largest high school basketball gymnasium since 1959 and actually exceeded capacity back in the days of Steve Alford and Kent Benson. The school was called New Castle Chrysler High School until a 2007 vote to take Chrysler out of the name."
"Situated along the Big Blue River is New Castle, IN, home to New Castle Fieldhouse that is the largest high school gymnasium in the world, with a seating capacity of 9,325," the Livability says.
"The city also houses the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, and recreation options include eight public parks."
"The Spartan Bowl at Connersville HS is often referred to as “The Grand Palace on Grand Avenue.” It opened in 1958," the Inside Indiana Business says.
"While it holds 5,134 people, it is not the largest capacity for HS gyms in Indiana. That honor is bestowed upon the New Castle Fieldhouse, which opened in 1959. It seats more than 8,000 fans.
"According to Visit Indiana, the Fieldhouse temporarily lost its title as the largest high school arena in the world. But after New Castle added additional seating, the gym now has the capacity of 8,424 and regained the title."
