Logan, Ohio, United States--A giant Washboard hangs on the side of Columbus Washboard Company in Logan, Ohio; the washboard is 24 feet tall, metal and wood construction; there's a little platform underneath the leg; the large washboard outside the building is "easy to capture, in great shape and really cool"; it sets the world record for being the World’s Largest Washboard, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"The World’s Largest Washboard hangs on the side of Columbus Washboard Company in Logan," the Silly America reports.
"Visit this Ohio roadside attraction any day of the year or during the Annual Washboard Music, Arts and Crafts Festival. Call ahead and you might also be able to take a tour of the factory.
"The Columbus Washboard Company has been in business since 1895 manufacturing washboards and offering high-quality vintage home cleaning supplies that speak to a bygone era. In 1999 the factory was moved from Grandview, just outside Columbus, Ohio to the small town of Logan, Ohio, nestled in the Hocking Hills region of the Appalachian basin," the official website says.
"We're the only washboard manufacturer still operating in the United States and continue to assemble our products by hand with a team of skilled craftsmen from our local community.
"The Columbus Washboard Company offers washboards with a variety of rubbing surfaces including spiral metal, galvanized, stainless steel, brass, and glass. We also offers chalk, cork, and mirror surfaces. All of these boards are hand assembled one at a time with equipment dating back to the 1900's."
"The large washboard outside the building is easy to capture; disappointed we weren't there at the right time for a factory tour. We did, however, get to hear live music on the green -- featuring a local washboard!" the Roadside America reports.
"This attraction is very underrated! The World's Largest Washboard is in great shape and such a unique find. The diversion from the highway is quick and worth it.
"The giant washboard is easily visible outside, and really cool. Take the washboard factory tour when the virus is over!"
"The washboard is 24 feet tall, metal and wood construction. There's a little platform underneath the legs, which I like to imagine hosting a Washboard Queen pageant in coming years, or a Wash-Off between washboard enthusiasts," the
World's Largest Things reports.
"The company moved from Columbus in 1999, when the company was preparing to shut its doors after 104 years in business. Jacqui, her husband Bevan, and four other investors decided they would purchase the company, move it south to Logan, and continue this important part of history.
"Her quote is emblematic of the kind of people who dare to think big, and take steps to preserve something important: "If there wasn't the pride, there wouldn't be the company. It's a working museum, and if we don't stay enthusiastic about it, it will die."
"For the uninitiated, washboards are used to clean laundry, and typically have a wooden frame surrounding a rippled metal surface. You soak clothes in soapy water, then rub them against the metal surface to scrub the fabric. Washboards are antiquated, but one last remaining factory produces them in the United States. In Logan, Ohio, the Columbus Washboard Company still sells about 80,000 washboards per year," the
Smithsonian Magazine reports.
"Co-owner and factory manager James Martin estimates that 40 percent of the company's sales are to people using them to wash clothes or keeping them for a prepper stash, 20 percent are sold for decoration and 40 percent are sold for use as musical instruments. Washboards are considered percussion instruments, with players using any available tools to make noise on the rubbing surface. It’s a pastime that originated with enslaved laborers on southern plantations.
"Today, the Columbus Washboard Company sits just about a block off the main downtown drag of Logan. The 33,000-square-foot brick building, of which 11,000 square feet is used by the company, looks just like any other old factory or warehouse—loading docks on the first floor and banks of small square windows on the upper levels. One thing, though, sets it apart—the world's largest washboard, tacked up to the side of the building. Inside, two full-time employees and one part-time accountant work to produce 120 washboards a day."
"The last washboard manufacturer in the United States has proven as tenacious as ring-around-the-collar. The company was purchased and moved to Logan and now is going strong, supported by preppers, tourists and a small but loyal band of die-hard washboard enthusiasts that includes both launderers and musicians," the Columbus Dispatch reports.
"Business is so good, in fact, that the company is planning a move this summer from its current home in an old factory building to a new headquarters and visitors' center downtown.
"Visitors to the factory can watch as washboards, practically identical to those produced a century ago, are handmade by workers employing both modern and original equipment."
"We took the tour of this factory (the last in the US). At first, walking down the steps to the basement level, I was a bit skeptical of what the tour would have in store, but our guide was wonderful and personable. The tour was interesting. You get to hear about the history of the company, see the tools and machines used over the years, watch as a washboard is made (if they aren’t busy, they even offer to make one for you to buy and take with you), and learn about washboard music. There is a store and a consignment area."
"You can’t be too old or too young to appreciate this unique place and a product that is a rare find today. The company generously donated many washboards to our troops in the Mideast where they were actively used and much appreciated. Such great history surrounding a beautiful, simple, low-tech product that is still sold and made exclusively in the USA! This special place is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face."
"We had a little time to waste while waiting on our escape room time so we decided to take a few photos here in front of the World's Largest Washboard. Always fun to see odd little things like this."
"You can take a self guided tour for free. It was interesting and had a nice gift shop. The guided tour would have definitely told more of the history but the self guided tour gave you good information on how they make the washboards."
"The Columbus Washboard company has 3 employees. The process of assembling the washboards was explained in detail. Only facility in the United States that still makes washboards. Definitely worth the time to your."
