Boise, Idaho, United States--The Big Idaho Potato Truck from Boise, Idaho, United States, currently on its 10th cross-country journey, travels the country promoting the certified heart-healthy Idaho Potato and its mission to help small charities in towns and cities with its A Big Helping program; weighing in at 4 tons, the fiberglass potato is 28 feet long and 11.5 feet high, thus setting the world record for being the World's Largest Traveling Potato Sculpture, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
If the potato was real, it would…
"Unfortunately, the potato that roams around on the back of the semi-truck isn't real, but it's pretty convincing. The massive potato weighs a whopping four tons and is 802 times heavier than the largest potato ever grown (11 pounds, if you were wondering.) Fun fact: a potato this size would take over 7,000 years to grow!" the Only In Your State says.
"Although it's exciting to see the Big Idaho Potato make an appearance across the country, the truck also values visiting the hardworking folks here in Idaho who make our potato industry possible. Last year, the truck visited places like Russ Frisby Farms, Legacy Farms, Brett Jensen Farm, and Wilcox Farms to get the full hands-on potato farming experience.
"The Idaho Potato Commission also wanted to make sure the truck would have a positive impact on the communities it visits. Every year during its tour, the truck identifies a charity in the community and offers a "Big Helping" based on their specific needs. Some charities that have benefitted from a big helping include Goodwill and West Ada Education Foundation, but there are many more."
"“When we launched the Truck six years ago, it was intended to be a one year campaign. Instead, the Truck became an overnight sensation – reminding consumers at every turn to look for the ‘Grown in Idaho®’ seal, which is prominently featured on the side of cab,” explained Frank Muir, President & CEO, Idaho Potato Commission (IPC)," an official press release says.
“We placed several other graphics on the Truck to communicate important key messages such as the Idaho® potato’s certification by the American Heart Association as a heart-healthy food; the Famous Idaho® Potato Bowl logo, the premier cold-weather college football bowl game; Spuddy Buddy, the Idaho® potato mascot; and important nutrition facts.”
"The Big Idaho® Potato weighs more than 6 tons - the equivalent of 32,346 medium-sized Idaho® potatoes. After being seen by millions of Americans, the most frequently asked question is still, “Is it real?” We’ll never tell…but if it is, the Big Idaho® Potato:
"The Big Idaho Potato Truck is on its 10th cross-country journey! It began in 2012 as a one-year campaign to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Idaho Potato Commission and became quickly apparent with its success that it would be more than a one-year occurrence, it literally became a big piece of pop-culture. It travels the country promoting the certified heart-healthy Idaho Potato and its mission to help small charities in towns and cities with its A Big Helping program. Not to mention that people just want to have their picture taken with a 4-Ton Idaho potato!" the official website says.
"Established in 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) is a state agency that is responsible for promoting and protecting the famous “Grown in Idaho®” seal, a federally registered trademark that assures consumers they are purchasing genuine, top-quality Idaho® potatoes. Idaho’s ideal growing conditions, including rich, volcanic soil, climate and irrigation differentiate Idaho® potatoes from potatoes grown in other states.
"The Big Idaho Potato Truck Tour has always had a charitable component to it. When the truck was still just an idea, albeit a big idea, the leadership at the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) wanted to make sure the Truck made an impact on the people who lived in the markets it visited. The Truck’s mission, “A Big Helping” is a meaningful and personal way for us to help. During its 6-month tour, the Truck will identify charities in many of the markets it visits and offer “A Big Helping” based on the organization’s specific needs. The IPC will work with the selected charity to create an event to help raise awareness, funds, food or all three for the non-profit."
