Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States--Two huge, nearly 200-foot-long rattlesnake creations snake along the median of the usually dry (and typically New Mexico desert-like) median of University Boulevard along the Mesa del Sol housing development on the south side of Albuquerque, New Mexico; they set the world record for being the World's Largest Rattlesnake Sculptures, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"This huge rock sculpture of a diamondback rattlesnake is just 0.2 mi off I-25. It snakes along the median of University Blvd for about 200 feet," the Roadside America says.
"You can take the freeway exit, drive along the snake, make a U turn, and return to the freeway in just a few minutes. Well worth the diversion."
"Step with care when you are hiking in the desert environment of Albuquerque, New Mexico, it’s the perfect place for a rattlesnake to camouflage," the Julie Journeys says.
"The World’s Largest Rattlesnake is hiding naturally just out of sight, a quarter of a mile off of I-25, snaking 400 feet down the median of University Boulevard.
"There is no designated parking lot, so you can only take a quick drive by the sculpture."
"The
American International Rattlesnake Museum is an animal conservation museum located in Albuquerque, New Mexico in Old Town Albuquerque. The museum is devoted to snakes, particularly rattlesnakes, and is dedicated to rattlesnake education. With the staff that is a participant in regular international viper research events, the museum hosts a diverse collection of living rattlesnakes and an extensive library of study material and educational tools.
"The museum has the
largest collection of different species of live rattlesnakes in the world, which are presented in recreated habitats, and claims to host more rattlesnake species than the Bronx Zoo, the Philadelphia Zoo, the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., the Denver Zoo, the San Francisco Zoo, and the San Diego Zoo combined. In addition to rattlesnakes, the museum holds a live Gila monster, one of the few known venomous lizard species.
"The museum also houses a large collection of snake-related artwork, artifacts, and memorabilia. The museum also contains a gift shop." (Wikipedia)
"When the City of Albuquerque hired Sites Southwest to landscape the median gliding up a long hill to the Mesa del Sol development, near the airport, the job had a hitch: no water," the New Mexico Magazine says.
"George Radnovich and his team put their heads together. What could possibly grow in those conditions? Sculpture that would speak to the environs came to mind. Rabbits? Roadrunners? No, one of the team members said. Rattlesnakes. Everyone loved it.
"Completed in 2007, the pair (one near Rio Bravo Boulevard, the other at the Mesa del Sol entrance) consist of hollow cylinders dotted with cobblestones that, a few biologists have carped, don’t match true rattler colorations. “We couldn’t find stones in those colors,” Radnovich says. With six-foot-high heads and bodies that undulate for about 200 feet, the snakes have spawned a lot of Instagrams, along with urban legends."
"200 foot long rattlesnakes are hollow cylinders adorned with hundreds of cobblestones, and designed by the architects of the antoine predock firm," The Noun Project says.
"Take I-25 south to exit 220, then east on NM 500/Rio Bravo Boulevard SE. Turn right at the traffic light onto University Boulevard SE. Look for the large snake sculpture in the median,"
A Couple of Drifters says.
"This giant, sculpted diamondback rattlesnake takes pride of place in a highway median on University Blvd. Unfortunately the powers that be neglected to realise the curb appeal of this reptilian roadside attraction – there is no parking here. So for those hoping to take a photo there is only a partial shoulder for pulling in on to grab a quick snap
"Strangely enough this 400-foot slithering sculpture is unknown to the majority of Burqueños (Albuquerque residents) themselves. In fact, there are actually two rattlesnake sculptures within the same median; continue uphill to see the other snake.
