Largest Ikea store: Philippines sets world record

MANILA, Philippines--Swedish furniture giant Ikea opened a new 730,000 sq ft facility in the Mall of Asia shopping center near the Philippine capital Manila; the two-level 270,000 sq ft store has a dining area and showroom, warehouses, an e-commerce facility and a call center; it sets the new world record for the Largest Ikea store, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

Ikea is sticking to Covid-19 protocols after the store's opening was delayed amid the pandemic, with an online booking system that is full for the next two weeks, according to store manager Georg Platzer. Customers have to wear masks and observe distancing, The Straits Times reports.

Largest Ikea store: Philippines sets world record

The Manila store was initially scheduled to open in 2020, but faced delays due to Covid-19 movement restrictions and the disruption of construction material supplies.

The company, which has more than 460 physical stores in about 60 markets, is planning to add nearly 60 more locations in the current financial year.

This branch is Ikea's first store in the Philippines. The vast space of 700,000 square feet (65,000 square meters)—the size of the Palace of Versailles—stretches across five floors in a mall complex nestled against Manila Bay.

The Philippines has a relatively young population of more than 105 million people dominated by a working-age demographic.

Worldwide, Ikea already has over 460 stores.
