Phillipsburg, Kansas, United States--Doyle Archer, who has worked for Coomes Inc. in Phillipsburg, Kan., for 20 years, has been driving trucks for more than 60 years, racking up approximately 5.5 million miles behind the wheel; the great-grandfather of 26 sets the world record for being the World's Oldest Truck Driver, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"Doyle Archer was officially certified as the world's oldest truck driver at the age of 90 years and 55 days. His driving career spans more than six decades, during which he has covered approximately 5.5 million miles," the Supply Chain 24/7 says.
"Archer, who has been employed by Coomes Inc. in Phillipsburg, Kansas, for 20 years is still trucking along. Doyle has driven across 48 US states and through all five provinces in Canada. “Anything you can haul in a truck, I have hauled it,” he added.
"Archer, who was just named a “Million Mile Safe Driver” after traveling one million miles without any incident, reflected on his years behind the wheel. “It has provided the opportunity to see many things that I wouldn’t have otherwise got to see. I’ve got to meet a lot of people from many different parts of the world.”
"The oldest truck / lorry / HGV driver (male) is Doyle Archer (USA, b. 9 December 1933), who is 90 years 55 days, as verified on 2 February 2024," the
Guinness World Records says.
" During his career, Doyle has earned the "Million Mile Safe Driver" award. He continues to log miles from coast to coast in his 2003 Peterbilt truck."
"A nonagenarian from Kansas who’s been behind the wheel of commercial big rigs for 60 years was recently crowned the world’s oldest truck driver. And despite his age, great-grandfather Doyle Archer told The Post he has no plans to retire any time soon.
"During his career, the married father of nine traveled a whopping 5.5 million miles across 48 states and five Canadian provinces, according to Guinness World Records, which certified his impressive record," the
New York Post says.
"Archer also drove the well-known Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles, including the first 8-mile stretch when the Eisenhower Interstate System in Kansas was first constructed. The trucker still vividly recalls seeing the sunlight shining off the Twin Towers as he crossed the George Washington Bridge just three or four days before 9/11."
"Doyle Archer, who has worked for Coomes Inc. in Phillipsburg, Kan., for 20 years, was certified as the world's oldest truck driver at the age of 90 years and 55 days old," the UPI reports.
"Archer has been driving trucks for more than 60 years, racking up approximately 5.5 million miles behind the wheel. The great-grandfather of 26 said his career has taken him all across the country, hauling all sorts of different cargo."
"I’ve been given the opportunity to see the Kennedy Space Center and Johnson Space Center of Houston, TX. Many decks and harbors of ports in many states dealing with international shipping," the CDL LIFE says.
"I have witnessed many sunrises and sunsets from behind the windshield. Deserts of the southwest, historic settlements, the bright lights of Las Vegas and the western lifestyle of the Cheyenne rodeo, the music of Nashville, TN, and the great steel mills of Chicago. But my favorite will always be the wheat fields of the High Plains in June and July.
”Doyle says he did not expect to ever become the world’s oldest trucker, but is happy to still be on the road. When he is home though, he spends time with his wife of 70 years, Lois, his nine children, 25 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. Doyle also has an interest in antique cars, and John Wayne Movies."
“I like the freedom being out in the open country versus working in an office or factory,” Archer said. “There’s some jobs I could’ve had that would’ve been pretty good office jobs and so on, but I like the environment out here," the KSN.com reports.
"You get to see the country. I do every week what a lot of people spend money on to take a vacation every year. Last week, for example, I left here and went to Minneapolis, Minnesota, ended up in Arizona, to Salt Lake, to Denver and back, so I got to see a good chunk of the country, and that’s the whole reason right there.
"That that and great people to work for here. Had it not been for that, I probably would’ve been looking to get out of it a long time ago.”
"Archer is a resident of Kansas and has been driving a commercial big rig for the past 60 years. Despite being far past retirement age, the trucker doesn't have any plans to retire. Throughout his career, he's traveled more than 5.5 million miles across 48 states as well as five Canadian provinces. Guinness World Records officially recognized him as the world's oldest trucker," the Wide Open Country says.
"Archer said that he enjoyed all of the traveling he got to do with the job. He got to visit the space centers, most of America's major cities, and enjoy the scenic mountainside. Archer's driven from Chicago to Los Angeles during his career.
"I would have never gotten to see those otherwise," he said. However, it wasn't all pleasant. Archer admits that being a trucker is hard work. He said, "You have to work hard at it, put in some long hours, inconvenient hours sometimes. Sometimes it's an all-night long drive."
