World's Longest Bra Chain, world record in Woonsocket, Rhode Island

Woonsocket, Rhode Island, United States--The Athena’s Cup, a volunteer group in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, dedicated to helping the fight against breast cancer by raising money for research, used volunteers to link up 200,527 donated bras that their breast cancer awareness campaign had collected over a period of about 10 years; they set the world record for the World's Longest Bra Chain, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"The Athena’s Cup charity broke the Guinness World Record for most bras hooked together in a continuous bra-chain with 196,564 bras spanning 124 miles long," the Rhode Island Monthly says.

"Athena’s Cup is a volunteer group dedicated to helping the fight against breast cancer by raising money for research. Plus, they spread the word on how breast exams, mammograms and healthy lifestyles are vital in reducing the risk of breast cancer.

"At River’s Edge Sports Complex in Woonsocket, the record breaking bra-chain was constructed by volunteers for thirteen days. Through wind, rain and fluctuating temperatures, the city’s firefighters, police, citizens and friends hooked and logged bras, measured the distance and more to create the world’s longest bra-chain."

"The completed bra chain measures 200.48 km (124.57 mi) long, and was displayed on a field in River's Edge Park looped in a 38 m x 38 m (124 ft x 124 ft) square, piled 1 m (3 ft) high. Jennifer Jolicoeur was inspired to break the record in this category over a decade ago in honor of a friend diagnosed with breast cancer.

"Through her company, Athena's Home Novelties, Inc., Jennifer set up a charity called The Athena's Cup, whose mission was to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research by using the ultimate goal of breaking the record title for Longest Bar Chain."

"Jennifer Jolicoeur, chief executive of Woonsocket-based Athena's Home Novelties, said the record attempt was first planned in 2009 and was inspired by an employee who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007," the UPI says.

"She said the group has since been collecting donated bras, and has even procured bras signed by celebrities including John Cusak, Keifer Sutherland and Hulk Hogan.

"The group is currently working to link the bras together at River's Edge Park in Woonsocket, and as of Saturday night they had connected 20,000 bras."

"The spectacle on a local soccer field easily achieved that goal Saturday afternoon as volunteers worked feverishly to link up 200,000 bras that their Woonsocket-based breast cancer awareness campaign had collected over a period of about 10 years.

"Beyond raising awareness and money for fighting breast cancer, the volunteers hoped to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chain of bras," The Providence Journal says.

"The origins of the campaign, dating back to 2007, involve Jolicoeur’s business. She is the chief executive officer of a Woonsocket company, Athena’s Home Novelties, which sells women’s romance enhancement items, including sex toys, much as Tupperware is sold."

"Athena’s Home Novelties’ ambitious charitable endeavor, The Athena’s Cup spent 10 years collecting unwanted bras from women all over the world. In October of 2019, it was time to begin linking their 200,527 donated bras to create their record-busting chain!" the official website says.

"On October 4, 2019, 1,000 boxes of bras were delivered to River’s Edge Sports Complex in Woonsocket, RI where this remarkable chain was constructed. Volunteers, aka HOOKERS, came together to raise breast cancer awareness and break the Guinness World Record for the most bras hooked together. This momentous project of hooking and linking each bra together had volunteers working tirelessly through the wind, cold, rain and a classic hard-driving New England Nor’easter storm.

"For 13 days, from early morning to late evening, The Athena’s Cup collaborative led by Jennifer Jolicoeur, the mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt, firefighters, police, citizens, friends and their children and Athena’s beloved Goddesses and Adoni, hooked, judged, logged, measured, walked and ran to make the world’s longest bra-chain."
