World's First Flavor Graveyard, world record in Waterbury, Vermont

Waterbury, Vermont, United States--Located in Waterbury, Vermont, Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Graveyard is a whimsical ‘resting place’ for all discontinued flavors of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, which include fan favorites like Turtle Soup, Fossil Fuel, and of course, Wavy Gravy; the Flavor Graveyard sets the world record for being the World's First Flavor Graveyard, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"Even the best Ben & Jerry’s flavors eventually melt away. Here we lay our dearly de-pinted to rest so we can mourn their chunks and swirls and keep their sweet memories alive," the official website says.

"From a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont, to far-off places with names we sometimes mispronounce, the journey that began in 1978 with 2 guys and the ice cream business they built is as legendary as the ice cream is euphoric.

"With a $5 correspondence course in ice cream-making from Penn State and a $12,000 investment ($4,000 of it borrowed), Ben and Jerry open their first ice cream scoop shop in a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont."

"Vermont is a haven for ice cream enthusiasts with a world of frozen delights that go beyond the ordinary. Indulge in the sweetness of soft, pillowy creemees made with pure, local maple or savor the explosion of flavors in swirly, chunky ice cream creations," the Vermont Vacation says.

"Discover off-beat ice cream stands at road trips throughout the state. Pay homage to flavors of the past at the Flavor Graveyard, a whimsical tribute to those flavors retired but not forgotten.

"In Vermont, ice cream is not just a summer affair; it’s a year-round sweet treat that invites you to explore a world of taste and tradition, adding a touch of sweetness to every season."

"Our Waterbury site is the only Ben & Jerry’s factory open to the public. Our very first factory, built in 1985, continues to manufacture upwards of 350,000 pints per day while offering our fans a sneak peek at our humble beginnings. Our small Scoop shop, retail area and tour route have remained fairly unchanged over the years," the official website says.

"Guided tours, which began in 1986, have allowed us to share with millions of guests the evolution of what started as a small local company from the early days in the gas station to the worldwide reach we’ve expanded to since we opened our first Scoop Shop on May 5, 1978!

"We can’t think of a better way to enjoy time with family and friends than learning how we make our ice cream then indulging in your favorite flavor or trying one of our euphoric new additions all the while taking in the beautiful mountain views!"

"The 30 minute guided portion of your Factory Experience begins with a quick MOO-vie to learn about our company culture followed by a short walk to our glassed-in mezzanine overlooking the production room floor where your tour guide will explain how we make our pints. To sweeten the deal you’ll also receive a sample of one of our chunks," the official website says.

"The tour ends in our Flavor Room with a tasting of one of our euphoric flavors* and a cow joke, or two! *nondairy, vegan options available.

"Our outside grounds offer space to enjoy your ice cream, play on the playground, pay your respects to our Dearly De-pinted in our Flavor Graveyard, snap a few memorable photo ops and take in the lovely mountain views. A great outing for all ages!"

"Ben & Jerry might be a couple of ice cream tycoons, but they’ve remained true to their roots. Case in point: the deliciously somber Flavor Graveyard located on the grounds of their factory in Waterbury, Vermont," the Atlas Obscura says.

"Opened in 1997, the memorial to bygone flavors was originally an online-only affair, until a handful of resin headstones were mocked up and planted on a hill behind the factory. Like a pet cemetery for punny ice cream recipes, each grave marker was given a clever epitaph that summed up the life and death of the flavor.

"Dearly de-pinted flavors (Ben & Jerry’s term) include fan favorites like Turtle Soup, Fossil Fuel, and of course, Wavy Gravy. Some of the flavors ended up in the ground due to bad sales, while others met stranger fates. Each of the headstones also bears the birth and death dates of the flavors."

"On the factory tour, you’ll watch a short film about Ben and Jerry’s inspiring story, get a view of the ice cream production line, sample an exclusive ice cream flavor, and have your choice of endless options from the Waterbury factory Scoop Shop menu. Although factory tours occur daily, note that the Scoop Shop at the time of writing is not open on Sundays and Mondays, so avoid those days if you want to indulge in some ice cream after the tour," the Old Stagecoach Inn says.

"Once you’ve satisfied your curiosity and your tastebuds, it’s time to commemorate your visit with authentic Ben and Jerry memorabilia from the onsite gift shop. And don’t forget the photo ops! If you’ve ever dreamed of being featured on a pint of ice cream, you’re in luck. Stop by the oversized outdoor Half Baked pint (which happens to be rated the best of the Ben and Jerry’s lineup), where you and a friend can put your faces in the cut-out spots where Ben and Jerry usually are on the label.

"Next, for a truly unique experience, stop by one of the most charming parts of the Ben and Jerry’s Waterbury experience – the “flavor graveyard.” Tombstones pay poetic tribute to ice cream flavors that have come and gone over the many decades with cleverly-worded descriptions. Finally, run off some of your (or your kids’) energy at the playground before setting off on your next adventure."

"Located in Vermont, USA, Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Graveyard is a unique and quirky attraction that you will be talking about for a long time. This place has the potential to make you laugh and feel bad at the same time," the Times Of India says.

"If you are an ice cream enthusiast, you must visit this quirky site. If the name is not clear enough, Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Graveyard in Waterbury, Vermont, is a whimsical ‘resting place’ for all discontinued flavours of Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

"Looking at the number of ‘graves’ here, it looks like the ice-cream brand had quite a number of flavours that failed to pull heartstrings. Whichever flavour didn’t work for the brand found a place here. They say, this is the place where flavours come to retire (or die). This graveyard is the result of Ben & Jerry’s love for all things whimsical. They take their sense of humour seriously, and this site is a beloved spot for residents as well as visitors."

""Even the best Ben & Jerry's flavors eventually melt away. Here we lay our dearly de-pinted to rest so we can mourn their chunks and swirls and keep their sweet memories alive." the Find a Grave says.

"Over 30 memorials with granite headstones and witty epitaphs are currently present. The graveyard is located at the top of the Ben & Jerry's Waterbury Factory property in the upper parking lots, past the playground area."

"Ben & Jerry have always had an awesome sense of humor. So when the famous ice cream company discontinued many of its decadent flavor combinations over the years, they decided to turn these unsuccessful offerings into a tourist attraction," the Quirky Travel Guy says.

"Behold, the Ben & Jerry’s flavor graveyard, complete with headstones and poetic epitaphs for most of their abandoned flavors!

"The Ben & Jerry’s graveyard is located at the company factory in Waterbury, Vermont. It’s pretty far out of the way, so you really have to be motivated to get here in person."
