World's Tallest and Longest Wing Coaster, world record to open in Doswell, Virginia

Doswell, Virginia, United States--The new winged launch coaster, dubbed Rapterra, located at King's Dominion in Doswell, Virginia, will be introduced in 2025, just in time for the amusement park's 50th anniversary; Rapterra will become the park's 14th roller coaster and will hit 65 mph and flip riders upside down three times, setting the new world records for being the World's Tallest and Longest Wing Coaster, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"Conquer the skies on Kings Dominion’s Rapterra, the world’s tallest and longest launched wing coaster. New in 2025, Rapterra simulates the flight of the legendary Jungle Hawk with an intense initial launch, plunging dives, twisting maneuvers and sweeping turns," the Kings Dominion says.

" Unlike traditional roller coasters that start with an uphill climb, Rapterra uses electromagnetic propulsion to blast you straight out of the station, accelerating from 0 to 65 miles per hour in 4 seconds—just like a Jungle Hawk when it mounts an attack on its prey."

"The intense launch thrusts you skyward to soar 145 feet above the jungle floor. You plunge downward into a steep dive, gaining speed before pitching upward again into a tight dive loop - the first of three stomach-churning inversions," the Kings Dominion says.

"Like a Jungle Hawk, you weave through the air, gracefully shifting from side to side and changing direction and altitude as you please.

"After soaring high above the midway for a second time, riders sweep sideways as they drop down to the ground. Riders flip head-over-heels spinning through the corkscrew, crest a peak with a momentary sense of weightlessness and quickly swoop into a 360-degree raptor roll before landing."

"Rapterra’s Immersive Backstory: Centuries ago, ancient leaders built a shrine to honor the mighty Jungle Hawk. People who entered the shrine became spiritually linked to—and temporarily possessed—the powers and abilities of the bird of prey ," the Kings Dominion says.

"Building the temple at the base of a volcano, Mt. Inferna, proved unfortunate. The ground surrounding the magma chamber collapsed, burying the Jungle Hawk temple under mounds of volcanic rock. The temple seemingly vanished from the earth.

"Archaeologists recently discovered the volcanic site and unearthed the remains of the Jungle Hawk shrine. The bird’s ferocious spirit remains at the site, launching brave riders to exhilarating new heights. Rapterra: The world’s tallest and longest launched wing coaster."

"Kings Dominion has news for thrill-seekers: The amusement park outside Richmond, Virginia, will unveil the world’s tallest and longest launched wing roller coaster, the company said. That means the ride will get off to a powerful start, with riders positioned on either side of the track," the NBC Washington reports.

"Rapterra will become the park's 14th roller coaster, replacing the inverted launched roller coaster, Volcano: The Blast Coaster, which the park retired in 2018.

"Rapterra will hit 65 mph and flip riders upside down three times, King Dominion said in an announcement Wednesday. It’s designed to create the sensation of flight. The coaster with an 89-second ride will stand 145 feet tall and stretch 3,086 feet."

The thrilling ride, dubbed Rapterra, is located at King's Dominion in Doswell, Virginia and will be introduced just in time for the amusement park's 50th anniversary, according to a press release," the People.com says.

"The record-breaking ride is designed to simulate a Jungle Hawk taking flight with an “intense initial launch” of 65 mph, followed by “sweeping turns,” corkscrews and “three stomach-churning inversions." the park shares. Rapterra is currently being built on the former site of the Volcano roller coaster at Kings Dominion, which closed in 2019.

"Rapterra's track comes in at 3,086 feet long and reaches a height of 145 feet tall, making it the longest and tallest winged launch coaster in the world. At the start of the ride, it reaches a max speed of 65 miles per hour in just four seconds — the same speed at which a Jungle Hawk can attack its prey, according to the release."

"The rollercoaster is set to open in 2025 as a part of Kings Dominion's 50th anniversary season. It's inspired by the powerful Jungle Hawk, giving riders the sensation of flying, and hits speeds up to 65 miles per hour in just four seconds of launch," the ABC11 Raleigh-Durham reports.

"This extraordinary addition promises new thrills for our guests, making it the perfect centerpiece for our 50th-anniversary celebration and reaffirming why Kings Dominion is the ultimate destination for unforgettable memories and exhilarating excitement," said Bridgette Bywater, vice president and general manager of Kings Dominion.

"The ride was manufactured by Bolliger and Mabillard and is 89 seconds with a total of three inversions. Construction is already in progress, with completion expected this fall."

"Wing Coaster is engineering firm Bolliger & Mabillard’s designation for its winged roller coaster designs. Winged roller coasters are a type of steel roller coaster where pairs of riders sit on either side of a roller coaster track in which nothing is above or below the riders.

"B&M began development on the first Wing Coaster between 2007 and 2008 leading to the opening of Raptor at Gardaland on 1 April 2011. There were eighteen B&M-designed Wing Coasters either under construction or operating worldwide as of 2024, with one more standing but not operating.

"In addition to the Wing Rider Coaster, Intamin also introduced a model named Wing Coaster.[41] The first installation was Skyrush at Hersheypark in 2012, and the latest Flying Aces at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The trains feature four seats per row: two center seats positioned over the track and have a floor, while two hang over the side and are the "wings". The Wing Coaster is also similar to the 4th Dimension roller coaster concept from the 1990s. However, unlike 4th Dimension roller coasters, cars on a Wing Coaster train do not spin — they are locked in place. (Wikipedia)

"As the coaches continue to arrive in shipments, each train will have to be put together and assembled with the associated parts from manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard. In case you haven’t heard, on September 6 at 3:07 PM, the final piece - element 76 - was bolted into place - completing Rapterra and bringing it full-circuit," the Kings Dominion says.

"In total, it took 81 days from the moment the first piece of track was installed all the way to the last piece of 3,086 ft of roller coaster track! With the final piece in place, it now officially holds the record of world’s tallest and longest launched wing coaster.

"The crew now turns their attention to the construction of the station and maintenance bays, as well as installing miles of electrical cables and equipment. While vertical construction won’t be as visible, rest assured that this bird is on track for takeoff in 2025."
