Chicago, Illinois, United States--The Starbucks Reserve Roastery at 646 North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, United States, has five stories at 35,000 square feet (3,300 m2), thus setting the world record for being the World's Largest Starbucks, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"The Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Chicago, which opened November 15, 2019, is the largest Starbucks location in the world and latest roastery to be built. The building at 646 North Michigan Avenue on the Magnificent Mile has five stories at 35,000 square feet (3,300 m2).
"It was formerly a flagship store for Crate & Barrel. The roastery includes a coffee bar, cocktail bar, and Italian-style sandwich shop. Starbucks involved Crate & Barrel founder Gordon Segal and Solomon Cordwell Buenz, original architects of the building in 1990, in remodeling the space.
"Inside the building are eight 56-foot-tall (17 m) copper tubes that transport coffee beans from floor to floor. Each floor has a theme and variety of delicacies. The first floor is the main floor for customers to grab coffee and treats to go, roasting equipment, a coffee bean scoop bar, as well as souvenirs and merchandise.
"The second floor includes a Princi location selling pastries, fresh croissants, cannoli, cheesecakes, and other sweet tarts. Other foods like pastas and pizzas can also be found on the same floor. The third floor consists of barrels filled with Guatemalan cold brew and other rare coffees. The roastery's cocktail bar is on the fourth floor; it serves both classic and modern drinks. The fifth floor is a public roof terrace." (Wikipedia)
"Although Starbucks was founded in Seattle, you'll have to head to Chicago to experience its largest coffee shop in the world. Ringing in at 35,000 square feet, the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in the Magnificent Mile neighborhood dwarfs other locations that previously held the title (including the Tokyo Reserve Roastery at 32,000 square feet and the Shanghai location at 30,000 square feet.)," the Food & Wine says.
"The store, which opened in 2019, takes up five floors of a North Michigan Avenue building. Spread out across them you'll find three main coffee bars — a Starbucks Reserve Coffee Bar, Experiential Coffee Bar, and Barrel-Aged Coffee Bar — an Arriviamo Cocktail Bar, and an outpost of Princi, the brand's Italian bakery partner.
"The coffee roasted on-site is served exclusively to guests at the Chicago Reserve Roastery and each floor offers a different experience. At the coffee bar on the main level, baristas serve classic espresso beverages such as cappuccinos, lattes, and cortados. On the third floor, an experiential coffee bar is dedicated to specialty creations such as pistachio lattes, siphon-brewed coffee flights, and affogatos made with nitrogen-infused gelato. And there's more than just coffee."
"In 1971 Starbucks opened in Seattle’s Pike Place Market and began a journey that has taken our coffee around the world. With our Chicago Roastery, opened in November 2019 on the city's Magnificent Mile, we continue to expand the boundaries of our craft with the world's largest Starbucks," the Starbucks Reserve says.
"A multi-sensory destination of epic proportions, the Chicago Roastery is five stories of coffee theater. Both workshop and stage, it is a three-dimensional window into the coffee journey. It’s an honor to share this immersive experience with you in Chicago.

"Step inside the front doors on Michigan Ave. and you’re immediately surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of coffee. Here, burlap bags of green (unroasted) Starbucks Reserve beans are roasted and then piped to coffee bars located on each level where they are crafted into beverages. The Chicago Roastery will roast small batch lots of Starbucks Reserve coffees from around the world. Unique to this Roastery, all coffee roasted in Chicago will only be served (and scooped) at this location. Customers can pick up a bag of hand-scooped Starbucks Reserve coffee at the Scooping Bar located on the first floor," the Starbucks Stories says.
"Standing as the centerpiece of the roastery is a 56-foot steel cask (the company’s tallest), a sculptural blend of form and function, where coffee beans go to rest and de-gas after being roasted. The bronze-colored cask has a perforated shell that reveals roasted beans moving through tubes in all directions, and then accumulating throughout the day like grains of sand in an hourglass.
"The light, the circulation, the artwork and the experience all draw the visitors’ eyes upwards. From the foot of the cask, look up to the domed ceiling high above as each ascending floor spirals and unfolds like a seashell. The design of the ceiling celebrates coffee as an agricultural product, inspired by misty green hills of coffee trees with rays of sun that radiate outward."

"The coffee chain opened its world’s largest Roastery location on Friday. The five-story location is 35,000 square feet, overtaking the Tokyo Roastery as Starbucks’ biggest location. Located in the city’s Magnificent Mile neighborhood, the new Roastery is replacing a former Crate and Barrel location," the
CNN reports.
"Starbucks (SBUX) said the Chicago Roastery is a tribute to the city and region, where it has nearly 800 Starbucks (SBUX) stores and employs more than 18,000 people. The Roastery itself has 200 employees.
"Roasteries are intended to be tourist attractions. They feature specialty coffees and teas, on-premise roasters and massive coffee casks where freshly roasted beans are held. They also have bars with craft cocktails and serve fancier food than a normal Starbucks location."
"The Starbucks Reserve Roastery, 646 N. Michigan Ave., is a coffee lover’s paradise. With its grand opening Friday, Nov. 15, this location is the sixth of its kind in the world—after Seattle, Shanghai, Milan, New York and Tokyo. But at 35,000 square feet, the Chicago location is the largest Starbucks in the world," The Columbia Chronicle says.
"Aguilar said she was excited for all the features exclusive to the Chicago Reserve Roastery—the coffee roasted in-house, specialty cocktails, Italian pastries at the Princi artisanal bakery and unique merchandise designed by Chicago artist Mac Blackout.
"On the first floor of the roastery sits a large bronze-colored coffee bean roaster—which is actually smaller than a traditional roaster, said Marc Wanless, director of operations, who oversees roasting at the six large-scale locations worldwide."
"Today marks the public opening of the largest Starbucks location in the world, the Chicago Starbucks Reserve Roastery (646 N. Michigan Ave.), a five-floor, 35,000-square-foot “retail experience,” the Forbes says.
"Located on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile at the intersections of Michigan Avenue and Erie Street, the opening of Chicago Reserve Roastery marks Starbucks largest-ever coffee retail space to date. According to a press statement, visitors “will be able to see, hear, and learn about coffee’s extraordinary journey through intentional and unparalleled design, while enjoying a menu featuring unique beverages exclusive to this location.”
"The opening of the Chicago Roastery also marks a significant retail shift for this noted Michigan Avenue address, originally built in 1990 by Chicago architects Solomon Cordwell Buenz as a Crate & Barrel store."
