"A bird aviary, community raffles for kids, pizza nights, costume contests and a Santa's village are just some of the features you'll find at the World's Largest Laundromat. And with it being open and staffed 24 hours a day, you can easily find more than 50 people and staff at any point of the night.

"Owned by Tom Benson, the laundromat gained its "world's largest" title back in 1982 under its previous owner. The Coin Laundry Association held a national contest to find out which laundromat was the largest. Almost 20 years later, in 1999, Benson bought it and sought to truly put it on the map."

"The Chicago suburb of Berwyn is home to the largest laundromat in the world, measuring in at 13,500 square feet and featuring 301 machines. The extraordinary facility is adorned with 16 TV screens, an aviary filled with finches, a massage chair, and arcade games along its front windows. "The World’s Largest Laundromat doesn’t just claim to hold the world record, it has evidence to prove it. In 1983, the Coin Laundry Association surveyed all potential contenders and empirically declared the Berwyn laundromat to be the one and only title holder, a claim to fame that has remained in place to this day.

"Tom Benson, the owner of the World’s Largest Laundromat—as it is simply and straightforwardly known—views the laundromat less as an ordinary facility and more as a “third place,” a community gathering space outside of home and work."

"The new and improved self-service laundry has 36 solar panels - a 20 percent increase from the original facility. The rooftop solar collectors - built by an Illinois company - help the community by providing renewable, clean energy and save the Laundromat 25 percent on its gas bill every month," the Illinois.gov says. 

"The World's Largest Laundromat does bear the distinction of having 301 machines and the largest solar thermal system in Illinois. Putting a premium on time, two-thirds of the washers are express models, which spin the wash at a faster rate and ultimately reduce the drying time by nearly 25 percent.

"Funding for the innovative system came in part from the State of Illinois' Renewable Energy Resources Program - administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity - which provides funding for as much as 30 percent of solar installations for homes or businesses."

"The World’s Largest Laundromat has 301 washers and dryers. It has 15 finches and miniature doves living in an aviary next to the bill-changing machines. It has a play area with a big roll of white butcher paper for drawing and a plastic replica of Snoopy’s doghouse that rocks and lights up for 50 cents," The Distance Podcast says.

"The World’s Largest Laundromat is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It never closes — not for Thanksgiving or Christmas, or when the temperature drops so low that area schools shut down. Tom Benson, the owner, doesn’t even know how to lock the building.

"A laundromat of some kind has occupied this corner of Berwyn, Ill., for more than half of the Chicago suburb’s 108 years. But it was only in the 1980s that it took on its superlative name — the result of winning a contest, sponsored by an industry trade group, to find the world’s biggest laundromat by square footage."

"Each of the panels is a Big 40 square feet in size, and they collect the sun’s energy atop the building and convert it to electricity. Their addition to the business was subsidized by an Illinois state co-op program."

"A French documentary crew, led by journalist Auberi Edler, is making a film about the World’s Largest Laundromat, located in Berwyn, and its philanthropic and environmental contributions. The laundromat, owned by Oak Parker Tom Benson, uses solar power, recycling, express machines and special lighting, making it a green business," the Oak Park says. 

"It partners with the Berwyn and Cicero public libraries for its children’s summer reading program, Read-to-Ride. For every book a child reads, they get a raffle ticket and a chance to win a bike. The more books, the better the odds are of winning.

"The laundromat also encourages youth creative writing. For junior and high school students, the laundromat has a short-story contest. The World’s Largest Laundromat got its title in 1983, after it won an industry-wide contest."

"You're about to lay your eyes on a nearly 14,000-square feet laundromat with over 300 machines and washers so massive they'll hold 90 pounds of clothes," the 97ZOK says.

"Can you imagine being able to do every load of laundry all at one time? Maybe you won't want to be done so quickly when you see all that is going on at the World's Largest Laundromat (actual name of the business) located at 6246 Cermak Road in Berwyn.

"This place might also have the longest list of laundromat amenities, too.

"Aside from a bird exhibit, the World’s Largest Laundromat features a children’s play area and a bicycle raffle. The Benson family also hosts community events at the laundromat, which is large enough to house 300 machines – in addition to all the extra amenities," the FOX Business says.

“It’s just a part of supporting the community, knowing who our customers are, [and] listening to our employees, who are talking to our customers,” says Benson. The World’s Largest Laundromat has held immigration events, seminars on solar energy and other topics they feel will attract customers.

"While other business owners might look at the play area and see potential for more machines – and more profits – Benson says his family feels the business does better financially by making the laundromat a pleasant and unique place to visit."
