Elko, Nevada, United States--The preserved White King being displayed at the (former) Historic Commercial Hotel in Elko, Nevada, has a height of 10 feet, 4 inches (3.2m) and a weight of 2,200 pounds (998 kg)," thus setting the world record for being the World’s Largest Stuffed Polar Bear, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"The White King is the world’s largest polar bear, with a height of 10 feet, 4 inches (3.2m) and with a weight of 2,200 pounds (998 kg)," the Ledgestone Hotel reports.
"The preserved White King is being displayed at the Commercial Hotel and Casino’s coffee shop at the corner of 4th Street.
"The gigantic stuffed polar bear from the Arctic Circle died in 1957 and was featured in a Rolling Stone story written in 1992 by Hunter S. Thompson called “Fear and Loathing in Elko”. Guests can take pictures with the glass-encased White King as memorabilia or as a postcard."
"Standing 10 feet, 4 inches and weighing 2,200 pounds, White King's arrival here was the result of a 1957 challenge to find the largest Polar Bear in the Arctic Circle. Visitors are welcome to mail postcards of a bathing beauty standing between White King's angry outstretched arms.Big plaster replicas of the mighty ursine glower menacingly from above the main entrances to the casino," the Roadside America reports.
"When last we visited, one had an arrow shot into his chest, while the other had numerous arrow holes. White King was further immortalized in Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing In Elko," a 1992 Rolling Stone cover story. In it, Mr. Thompson keeps future Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas, from shooting the already dead bear. According to Thompson, a liquored-up Thomas shouted, "I've had enough of this goddamn beast. It doesn't belong here. We should blow its head off."
"In 2022 the casino was being remodeled as a haunted house, with White King still in residence."
"Guarding the entrance of the Historic Commercial Casino is the White King, a stuffed polar bear who is the largest of its kind in the world. The bear hails from Alaska and was hunted down by an Eskimo," the City Seeker reports.
"When the Jonas Brothers were owners of the Historic Commercial Casino they purchased this beast in 1958 and it has since then been a center of attention for locals and visitors alike. The white ursine is exactly ten feet (3 meters) and four inches (ten centimeters) tall, and weighs more than 2000 pounds (900 kilograms); and he deserves to be a part of your vacation postcards when in Elko."
"During his lifetime, White King was thought to weigh more than 2,000 pounds. After his death, the Jonas Brothers (no not those ones) of Denver prepared the bear in the stuffed and mounted position seen today, which is reported to be the largest dead polar bear in the world," The Atlas Obscura reports.
"In 1958, the Commercial’s previous owners purchased White King from the Denver taxidermists for their hotel and casino’s pièce de résistance, going so far as to alter the marquee of the casino to include a giant plaster polar bear in the likeness of White King alongside the classic neon, thereby making the Commercial’s branding synonymous with the bear once and for all.
"Encased in glass and displayed prominently in the casino lobby’s entrance off Queer Street, the White King has lorded over the mere mortals in the Casino for 33 years."
"Me and my girlfriend stopped in Elko and went to Commercial Casino to take a picture of the statue of White King outside. Once we were there we figured we would go in, play some slots, and get a picture of the real White King inside."
"It's a really small casino but I liked the polar bear and they also gave pool tables in the bar area. I would probably gamble elsewhere. WOW I just heard that's the worlds largest polar wat I guess that's a reason to stop."
"The only reason to stop here is to catch a glimpse of the roadside attraction: "White King," the world's largest polar bear (dead, stuffed, & safely locked up in a glass case). The anticipation of our arrival was much more exciting than the actual event of walking in and seeing him face to stuffed-face. I did have photographic evidence that the bear was a giant."
"The Commercial has the largest polar bear believed to be killed and preserved in the lobby. It's huge!"
"The staff was friendly and the White Polar bear inside was way cool."
