Sapulpa, Oklahoma, United States--A 66-foot tall gas pump (or 74 feet including the circular sign on top) can be found in front of the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum in Sapulpa, Oklahoma; the museum commissioned the big piece to draw visitor’s off the road and into their space; it is shaped like a vintage gas pump that would have been found at service stations across Route 66 in its heyday and sets the world record for being the World’s Tallest Gas Pump, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"If you’re driving the full length of Route 66, you’re going to need plenty of gas. Maybe even enough to fill this roadside attraction: the World’s Tallest Gas Pump in Sapulpa, Oklahoma," the Silly America says.
"This 66-foot tall gas pump can be found in front of the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. The museum commissioned the big piece to draw visitor’s off the road and into their space. The roadside attraction is shaped like a vintage gas pump that would have been found at service stations across Route 66 in its heyday. At the top is an illuminated 14-foot globe that advertises the museum.
"Originally the giant gas pump was meant to have an inner spiral staircase and observation deck inside but, due to safety codes and complications, that part of the project was scrapped. It was completed in May 2018 and was awarded the Best New Attraction in Oklahoma award for that year."
"The Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum has been open for a year now, and they hope their strange road sign idea will bring in visitors," the KTUL says.
"I want them to say, 'Oh wow, there's the world's tallest gas pump' and, 'what's in that building,'" said Lina Holmes, the museum's executive director. "We're hoping they'll come in the doors after they see the pump."
"Inside the re-purposed armory, a normal-sized version of the gas pump is standing, giving us a sneak peek of what's ahead as the sign is finished. Getting the 14-foot globe to the top of the sign was a project, and one that the museum has been looking forward to for months."
"The 66-foot-tall gas pump in front of the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, neared completion last week with the installation of what will be a lighted medallion on top," the Route 66 News says.
"Officials are billing it the World’s Tallest Gas Pump, with the idea of the oversized landmark drawing visitors into their museum.
"The station reports that only thing left to install on the gas pump is the railing, a handle, a hose and a coat of paint. Fox 23 in Tulsa reports that when finished, the museum plans to submit the big gas pump for inclusion to the Guinness Book of World Records."
"Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum began as the dream of Richard Holmes, a Tulsa attorney and car enthusiast. In 2012 Holmes put an advisory board together whose members were all car lovers and collectors; they all shared the same dream" the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum says.
"Three huge garage doors make it easy for antique cars to enter and exit the museum. With 10,000 square feet of space, the building now shows off beautiful and rare cars on the former drill room floor.
"At the other end of the building an area highlights how the old armory was used for the 45th Army Reserve in conjunction with Route 66, along with a space dedicated to honoring the Mother Road."
"The Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum in Sapulpa posted a video to Facebook showing a globe with the museum's name and logo being lifted by a crane to the top of the 66-foot-tall gas pump Friday morning," the UPI reports.
"The museum said the project will be completed in a few more weekends, as volunteer workers still need to attach the pump handle and hose and then paint the massive sculpture.
"Lina Holmes, the year-old museum's executive director, said she hopes the unusual roadside attraction will draw people to the museum. Museum officials said they plan to submit the finished project to Guinness World Records as the world's tallest gas pump."
"Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum, at 13 Sahoma Lake Rd., sports the self-described “World's Tallest Gas Pump,” the AAA says.
"The museum is located in a decommissioned armory and details the 45th Army Reserve, Route 66 and classic cars. The collection includes a two-door Lincoln-Zephyr, which was only one of 600 convertible coupe models produced in 1938."
"Sapulpa is on old U.S. Route 66, now SH-66 and Historic Route 66 (a/k/a the West Ozark Trail) through town.[26] Route 66 sites include the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum, which opened in August 2016 in an armory built in 1948, and the Tee Pee Drive-In which opened the next year.
"It features the world's tallest replica antique visible gas pump, at 66 feet, or 74 feet including the circular sign on top. Still standing is the Rock Creek Bridge, a/k/a the historic Bridge #18 at Rock Creek, a 1921 metal bridge that became a link in the original Route 66 in 1926.
"Sapulpa is a city in Creek and Tulsa counties in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 21,929 at the time of the 2020 census, compared with 20,544 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Creek County." (Wikipedia)
