Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States--At 60 feet tall and over 30 tons of pure bronze, the 60-foot-tall sculpture created by artist Leonard McMurray and located in south Tulsa at Oral Roberts University, depicting two massive hands gently pressed in prayer comprise sets the world record for being the World's Largest Praying Hands Statue, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"Weighing in at 30 tons, the largest bronze sculpture in the world is located in south Tulsa at Oral Roberts University," the Visit Tulsa says.
"Known as the world's largest praying hands, the 60-foot-tall sculpture was created by artist Leonard McMurray. The hands were cast in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico in 1980 and stood in front of CityPlex Towers until they moved to the front of the ORU campus in 1991."
"The hands were originally built outside of the City of Faith Medical and Research Center, a massive modern complex established as a holistic Christian hospital by the ultra religious Oral Roberts University. The sculpture was cast in 1980 in Mexico and shipped to Tulsa in a particularly labor intensive bit of cost-cutting," the Atlas Obscura says.
"At 60 feet tall and over 30 tons of pure bronze, the supplicating hands were one of the largest pure bronze statues in the world when built. One hand is from a casting of Oral’s hand and the other is from a casting of his son Richard’s hand.
"In 1980, after the imposing hospital citadel was converted mostly to office space. the giant hands were then moved to the entrance of the Oral Roberts University campus where they remain today. The ultra-detailed (if over-sized) hands are forever locked in a prayer that even if it is unanswered, can certainly not be missed. They can even be seen from the airplane when touching down in Tulsa, and don’t miss taking a stroll through the equally surreal Oral Roberts University campus which is full of retrofuturistic architecture."
"At the entrance of Oral Roberts University, founded in 1963 by the famous evangelist, are the World’s Largest Praying Hands. The religious artwork is seen here at sunset," the Encircle Photos says.
"The bronze sculpture was created by Leonard McMurry and cast in Mexico in 1980. It was then sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 450 pieces and erected in front of the City of Faith building.
"Nine years later, it was relocated to the Avenue of Flags, now called Billy Joe Daugherty circle. The sculpture is 60 feet tall and weighs 30 tons."
"Originally known as "The Healing Hands," two massive hands gently pressed in prayer comprise what is reportedly the largest bronze sculpture in the world," the Time Magazine says.
"Weighing in at 30 tons, the sculpture now sits at the entrance to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. Inscribed on the base is the Bible passage Luke 2:52: "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men."
"A 60 ft, 30 ton bronze sculpture called the Praying Hands, by sculptor Leonard McMurray (cast in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico in 1980) was moved to the ORU campus entrance in the summer of 1991," the Road Trippers says.
"It was originally located in front of the CityPlex towers, a commercial office space. Perfect for a photo op!"
"The world’s largest praying hands reach a total of 60 feet high and weigh 30 tons, also making them among the largest bronze sculptures in the world. The giant hands in prayer were designed by artist Leonard McMurray and were cast in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico in 1980," the
Silly America says.
"The piece depicts two ultra detailed large hands upright, with fingers touching, as if in prayer. Inscribed on the base is a Bible passage from Luke 2:52: “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”
"Originally titled “The Healing Hands” it was installed at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the early 80s. For years the sculpture lived in front of the university’s City of Faith, a medical center devoted to faith healing. In 1991, after a series of lawsuits bankrupted the center and forced them to close their doors and be converted to office space, the giant hands were moved to their current location at the entrance to the university."
"Giant sculpture of two hands touching at the entrance to Oral Robers University. They are set on top of a very large and wide granite foundation. The hands are located in a beautifully sculptured garden area in the median of the main entrance drive. There are flagpoles at the middle of the median, the praying hands sculpture at the east end, and ORU spelled out in shaped hedges at the west end," the
Waymarking.com says.
"Oral Roberts University is located in Tulsa, on the east side of the river. The Praying Hands/main entrance are on the east side of S. Lewis, north of 81st. It is a beautiful campus, with many fountains, uniquely shaped buildings, and garden settings. As someone mentioned to us, "everything here is symbolic!"
"After you drive through the main entrance here, you can see the very tall prayer tower shaped like a cross with a crown of thorns. It is free to take the ride to the top and see the outstanding view of the campus."
