Islamorada, Florida, United States--At 40-feet long and 30-feet tall, Betsy the Lobster, is a giant Spiny Lobster, the type found in the Florida Keys was modeled after a spiny lobster by sculptor Richard Blaze and is now located at the Rain Barrel artist’s village in Islamorada, Florida; it sets the world record for being the World's Largest Spiny Lobster Sculpture, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"Big Betsy just might be the world’s largest (spiny) lobster. At 40-feet long and 30-feet tall, the big crustacean was intricately modeled after a spiny lobster in the 1980s by sculptor Richard Blaze. Betsy is located at the Rain Barrel artist’s village in Islamorada, Florida and is a beloved creature of the Florida Keys," the Silly America reports.
"Betsy vies for the title of World's Largest Lobster. 30 feet high, 40 feet long. Sculptor Richard Blaze spent five years building Betsy in the 1980s, the Roadside America reports.
"Think for a moment how much a dish of Lobster Wellington or Lobster Newburg costs -- with just normal-size lobsters. How much would you pay for one 35 feet long and 25 feet high?"
"If only it were real, I'd need a loooot of butter."
"Modeled in eerily life-like detail, Betsy is huge spiny lobster that was originally created in the 1980s to celebrate the species which is native to the Florida Keys, the Atlas Obscura reports.
"Betsy’s original home was in the south Florida Keys where she became a popular photo destination rivaled only by the tip soft the Keys themselves. However, in 2009 the monster crustacean was moved to a new location in front of the Rain Barrel Artisans’ Village in Islamorada.
"At around 40 feet long and nearly 30 feet tall, Betsy is not just a living nightmare, but may also be the largest lobster in the world despite some vocal opposition from a fiberglass creature in Canada."
"The giant lobster’s name is Betsy. She’s made of fiberglass and she measures 30 feet tall and 40 feet wide. She resides in a parking lot of the Rain Barrel Artisans Village in Islamorada, Florida, at Mile 86 on the Overseas Highway, one of the best road trips in America, the Quirky Travel Guy reports.
"Betsy is a Spiny Lobster, the type found in the Florida Keys. They have no claws, but lots of legs and a tail known for its delicious meat. She’s sitting there, just waiting for you to pull over and snap a few winning Instagram photos of the famous crustacean!
"Betsy was created in Marathon, Florida by sculptor Richard Blaze (not the famous chef) starting in 1980. Work took five years, and by that time, the restaurant that commissioned the statue was out of business. Betsy was put on display at Treasure Village for awhile, but ended up in storage when that store closed. In 2009, Betsy was moved to her current home at the Rain Barrel Artisans Village. Her 12 legs were removed, and her torso was placed on a trailer and trucked up to Islamorada."
"Spiny lobsters, also known as langustas, langouste, or rock lobsters, are a family (Palinuridae) of about 60 species of achelate crustaceans, in the Decapoda Reptantia. Spiny lobsters are also, especially in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, and The Bahamas, called crayfish, sea crayfish, or crawfish ("kreef" in South Africa), terms which elsewhere are reserved for freshwater crayfish." "Can't miss this place off the side of the road... the Giant Lobster sculpture welcomes you to the arts and crafts village. Numerous art shops fill the area if you're looking for beach art works. Stop by and enjoy the art and have a slice of frozen key lime pie!"
"This is a great stop with several different types of stores and shopping! Tourist trinkets, galleries, clothes etc, lots of different options! There is even a bar on site! This place is definitely worth a stop.
"Obviously you have to stop to get a picture with Betsy the 30ft lobster! This place has a great selection of FL Key souvenirs including stickers, flags and all things Southernmost point. We stopped by quickly on our way to KW and then again to pick up a few final items on way up to Miami."
"Was interesting to stop by and see different vendors. Also the picture with Betsy is a must!"
"What a fun, quick stop on the drive to Key West. Be sure to get a photo with the lobster out front. Lots of wares to browse through."
