"Clothespin, a 45-foot steel sculpture by Claes Oldenburg, has inspired many reactions since its installation in 1976.
While Philadelphia City Hall is formal and ornate, Oldenburg’s quirky artwork, located just across the street, is sleek and whimsical," the Visit Philadelphia reports.
"Oldenburg linked his design for Clothespin to Constantin Brancusi’s well-known sculpture The Kiss in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Many agree that the shape of Clothespin resembles two lovers entwining."
Made of Cor-Ten steel, Clothespin is praised by art critics for its velvety texture and weathered, warm reddish-brown color.[3] The silvery steel "spring" part of the two-textured work resembles the numerals "76", apt for the United States Bicentennial year.
It was commissioned in May 1974 by developer Jack Wolgin, as part of the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority's percent for art program.

Testimonials according to the Four Square:
"Huge transit hub serving thousands of commuters a day. Perfect meeting spot. Fantastic statue!"
"Its location is surprising, I almost missed it. Even with its larger than life size! The shadows that the building casts hide it away. I love to look everywhere in new places so I'm glad I saw it."
